A massive serve will allow you to excel on grass and hard courts by, look at the likes of Ivanisevic, Kraijcek, Philippousis and Safin. Big freaks who excelled when they could just bludgeon the ball. I give Cilic a magnificent chance of winning Wimbledon this year, a guy of his limited ability would never have a chance on clay.

The nine guys I mentioned were essentially journeyman who only prospered briefly on the mud. They didnât the skill set to play proper tennis on grass or hardcourts. Tennis on clay is akin to OâByrne Cup/Dr McKenna Cup gaelic football in the mud of January.
Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg and Pete Sampras would all make any Top 10 of the greatest players ever. They all have one thing in common, they never won on the mud of the French Open.

Becker - no
Edberg - no

Itâs also interesting how most of the tennis elite fraternity who have given an opinion of Nadal-Federer have opted for Nadal. Connors, McEnroe and Agassi all say Nadal was greater, at the minute the stats are skewed to Federer because he had a head start in a weak era.
If there were two clay court grand slams (which there should be) Nadal would have over 20 grands slams.
