You are, to a certain degree. It’s mitigated by having more control of the quality of what’s in the substances and who can get them. But yes you’re right it would do a lot of harm.
I think the harm saved would outweigh it. I don’t think you can underestimate how much misery and violence is driven by drugs trade, and the vast majority or people in prisons. Most of that would be gone pretty much at a stroke.
How would you get control of the supply chains in Colombia, Mexico and Afghanistan for the heroin?
And how much do alcohol and tobacco cost the state despite the taxes ? Instead of having a few cans you’d have fellas shooting up of a Friday night, because they can
I wouldn’t legalise heroin I don’t think. Coke and mdma are absolutely everywhere anyway. We have seen that prohibition absolutely doesn’t work, I think the end game is legalisation. It’s a long way off. It’s happening already with weed.
Its rampant now. Its as casual as drinking these days. I was down the boardwalk during the take away pints time and there was a rake of young lads snorting down poor man’s Kilkee by the portaloos in daylight. I don’t think I every saw the stuff till i was 22. Even them I was like wft this is a bit much.
I don’t believe you would eliminate very much harm done by the drugs trade at all. To have any chance of doing that you would need worldwide policies to which every country, especially the producing countries, would have to sign up.
Earlier it was stated that alcohol does more damage than any other drug in this country. Why? Availability. There are no barriers to consumption.
To remove all barriers to consumption of every drug under the sun would likely lead to a far worse situation.
I mean look at how legal drugs in the US have completely ravaged communities.
Heroin and condoms on prescription. Dentists would have a roaring new trade. They’d give you the drugs that make your teeth fall out, and then clean up the mess.
I wouldn’t be in favour of drug legalisation. I think maybe some form of more lenient penalties for possession charges of softer drugs is probably for the best but I don’t think legalising it really solves anything.
All Bunny Colvin’s Hamsterdam achieved was NIMBYism.
and the lads producing it would just stand idly by and watch it happen? I’d say it would cause an untold amount of bloodshed to get it operational. It would be a war pretty much
I’m in favour of legalization and control, but, and it’s a big but, the penalties for selling to minors, and for committing violent crime whilst under the influence, would have to be Draconian.
I think with regard to alcohol now, the biggest scourge would be in relation to off licenses and supermarkets. At least drinking in pubs makes it more known and costly so there are disincentives there if we have people drinking in pubs.
