World cup destroying the GGA in the TV ratings war

I have been posting here for many years and never will I have given the impression that I am obsessed by England. I think you are making a gigantic leap there. Its not paranoia or inferiority. I am nothing if not confident and informed of who I am as a person. You will find that much of Britain treats Ireland as an irrelevance really. In fact if brexit has thought us anything its that their populace and even higher ranking cabinet ministers know little to nothing about Ireland. I have that same since of irrelevance towards them. The post above that you quoted is basically a struggle to understand why other Irish people are so ingratiated with the place. Its not a myopic blinkered view. I have travelled all over the world and seen many cultures and traditions. Iā€™m not sure its an enigma wrapped up in a mystery as you alluded. Its brash, in your face, pompous and at times fascist. I find very little substance in any of it. But if you can then I am happy for you.

Mistaking an interest in British life, culture and society for ā€œself-identifying as Britishā€ is a rather basic, cliched and sad position to take, and yes it does give off a terrible bang of a paranoid inferiority complex.

I have a huge interest in British life, culture and society. Why wouldnā€™t any Irish person?

Thats fine. You are entitled to do so. Do you think there is an equivalent Sydney sitting over in England that has a comparative level of interest in all things Irish. I doubt it. And if you read my original post you will see that this interest is cultivated in your brain over time through marketing, sky TV, etc etc.

Iā€™m not particularly interested in the fortunes of an imagined character equivalent to me in England that youā€™ve dreamt up.

Yes, generally an interest in things is cultivated by media - television, radio, films newspapers, magazines, books, and by education. The same as with any country, any thing, and the same as with this country itself. Itā€™s not a big, bad conspiracy - itā€™s called embracing the world.

imagine we closed ourselves off to other cultures

weā€™d all be watching ros na run and riding close relations like they do in Tipperary.

Let Tipperary be a lesson to you @johnnysachs, unless of course youā€™re from Tipperary which would explain a lot

Its more than an interest. The marketing and proliferation of british tv and pop culture defines people, who they are, how they think. So as I said already it does mean that people whether they like it or not do subliminally at least get indoctrinated into a type of british outlook and ideology. When you think about it it has to. Its a bit mad to think that one Irish man would give another Irishman a slagging for being a scouser and the ā€œscouserā€ calling the other fella a ā€œmanc bastardā€.

do you have a similar outlook on the proliferation and marketing of US tv and popular culture. Which has as big an influence, if not more.

Outside of sports, US culture has had a much bigger influence on Irish people. Look at D4.

ā€œIndoctrinatedā€.

Thereā€™s that paranoia coming out again.

When I was only a weeeee young lad, I went to London every summer. It was tremendously exciting. It was teeming, it was buzzing, it was in some ways frightening, but it was exciting, it was colourful, it was different, it was the world, it was fucking great, everything that grey, monotone, closed off Ireland wasnā€™t.

British pop culture is the finest in the world.

Iā€™d hate to think Iā€™d have missed out on enjoying London or enjoying British pop culture because of I was indoctrinated by some weird idea of cultural purity.

I like my cultural influences to be distinctly non-ā€œpureā€ and mongrel, thank you.

Guys.

I think there is merit to both your arguments.

Letā€™s just all get along and get behind the Senior Limerick Hurling team.

Bad news for rugby and hurling fans

That doesnā€™t account the many like myself who watched on ITV either

The Ronnie and Hamilton 500k

How is it bad new for rugby? Its the off season for rugby in Ireland at the moment. Bizarre comment.

Why havenā€™t you changed your username yet?

Itā€™s offensive

The @Cicero_Dandi poster is using the username of a self confessed paedophile. Why donā€™t you get your head out of his arse and confront him about that.

Deflect

You havenā€™t addressed your idiotic comment about how watching the England v Croatia match on television in Eire is bad news for rugby, when its the off season for rugby in Ireland. Bizarre comment.

Why do you idolize a woman beater

Interesting from that article that the GGA football final between county Dublin and county Mayo had a higher average viewership than the soccer football playoff between the Republic of Ireland and the Kingdom of Denmark. I would have thought that would be the other way around.
