I just cannot understand where any optimism from the english is coming from. They look the right side of mediocre, just, but nothing more, and look lumbering and uneasy at the back. Colombia dismantled them for 60 odd minutes. They’re honest grafters, but look like they’ll get taken apart at some point by a team playing well.
They might get by Croatia tomorrow. Their tails are up and Croatia have no tradition, England can call on the ghosts and the dementia from 1966. I suspect it will go to penalties and England will prevail.
They’re a solid hard working team, not at all lumbering and uneasy at the back, quite the opposite I’d have said, Stones and Maguire have been generally very steady, Walker has done alright and offers a lot going forward and with his distribution,
In fairness Columbia destroyed them for less than 20 minutes of the 120, it seems obvious that they have captured the English public’s imagination especially because they have a lack of ego, no real stars to speak of,

Croatia are on the back of two 120 min games - it’s more 60/40 in England’s favour i’d say. I’d agree with Flatty in that they are a very mediocre team that have gotten every break possible - but that’s sport and I doubt the English public give a fuck. Be interesting to see how they react to going behind and having to chase a game.

Of course they’re mediocre, on paper they’re quite weak, but it’s not fair to say they’re a shambles at the back, they’re a hard working team and it’s understandable that they’ve got massive public support at home

England’s tradition of being mainly a laughing stock, even in their own country, at major tournaments will win them a world cup ffs sake. I think Croatia’s injuries and tiredness will help them get to a final alright.

The EPL fanatics/Pretend IRA/Eire soccer types are having a collective breakdown at the thought of England springing a surprise and making it to the World Cup final. God know how they’ll react if it does happen and England prevail tonight. It’ll probably take a few wins at the start of the upcoming season from their beloved Man U and Liverpool to help them get over it.

I dont think anyone really cares that much, mate… any ill will is more down to England being a very average team rather than along nationalist lines.
