World Cup's top 100

I see the guardian have compiled a top 100 World Cup players of all time. It starts off with Tomas Brolin in 100th which makes you think

They’ve only disclosed 100-61 so far with 60-21 tomorrow and the somewhat interesting 20-1 on Thursday.

It’s an age old way of stimulating debate and resurrecting the whole Pelé v Maradona argument.

Tomas Brolin was a very good player before he went to Leeds.

There is no argument. El Diego wins hands down.

Paul Gascoigne ahead of the likes of Klinsmann, Bebeto, Lahm, Del Piero, Schillaci, Dasayev says enough for me

What would be the top 10?

Zidane, Zoff, Gert Muller, the Real Ronaldo, Pele, Maradonna, Beckenbauer, Robbie Keane. I suppose the likes of Cafu and Mattheus wouldn’t be too far off either given their longevity

Carbajal the Mexican keeper has legendary WC status. If Bobby Moore isn’t in the top 10 its not worth bothering with either.

14 off the top of my head - I’d expect all these to be in the top 20 anyway.

Maradona
Pele
Garrincha
Beckenbauer
Muller
Klose
Fontaine
Cruyff
Socrates
Puskas
Seeler
Ronaldo
Maldini
Platini

Ah come on - I cannot wait to see what 60 players have had better world cups than Hagi? As big Jack said in 1990 the boy Hagi played us on his own. In 94 he was peerless.

Jairzinho another top 20 cert, as should be Chiggia from 1950 who also scored in every game of the tournament bar the one he was suspended for.

Hagi’s goal against Argentina in 1994 was a classic. One of the best counter-attacking goals I’ve ever seen in the best match of that tournament.

If we are talking about World Cup performance, Gascoigne was ahead of Del Piero.

He was also a better player over his career than Schillachi.

Shit thread.

When did Del Piero do anything like excel on a World Cup stage?

Raymond Kopa will be hard bet.

Hmmm. Del Piero won a World Cup and appeared in 3 tournaments. Gascoigne only played in 1, got a couple of assists, conceded a penalty and lost his mind.

Gascoigne was brilliant in that World Cup in fairness.

I don’t think Del Piero ever reached that level.

I’m not saying Del Piero wasn’t a brilliant player in general.

Del Piero never had a big World Cup. He was in and out of the team in 02 and 06 (more out than in 06) and came in for a lot of criticism in 98, many believing (rightly) Baggio was a much better option.

The Real Ronaldo is the greatest World Cup player of all time.
