World Cup's top 100
Del Piero never had a big World Cup. He was in and out of the team in 02 and 06 (more out than in 06) and came in for a lot of criticism in 98, many believing (rightly) Baggio was a much better option.

The Real Ronaldo is the greatest World Cup player of all time.
Isn’t he the cumulative top scorer?

To be honest Del Piero never fulfilled his potential after the bad knee injury early on in his career. He was never more than a peripheral figure for Italy - always behind the likes of Baggio, Vieri and Totti. Managers didn’t rate him as their no.1 attacker and this was even the case at Juve. At somewhere close to Del Piero’s peak years Capello had him sitting on the bench behind Trezeguet and Zlatan.

All fair enough but I don’t think Gascoigne was particularly good either. He didn’t even score did he? And he conceded what might have been a very big penalty. He wouldn’t be near that list if he wasn’t English.

Did Del Piero score?

Fair enough but I don’t think Del Piero should be on it either. On paper you would think Del Piero would be an Azzurri icon. 5 major tournaments, World Cup winner, nearly 100 caps, one of the countries all time top scorers etc.

But the fact is his contribution in all these tournaments was either minimal or he bombed. I don’t think Euro 2000 will ever be forgotten when it comes to Del Piero.

I remember him scoring a header against Mexico in 02 after coming on as a sub. Think it saved them from going out in the first round at that tournament.

Yes. Scored against Germany in 06 and think he got one against Mexico in 02. Not sure about 98.

He also scored in the shootout in the World Cup final.

And he scored against Germany in that WC semi-final.

Yea, I think his World Cup record stands up alright.

Italy weren’t in the 02 final mate.

All in all I think we can agree that it has been proven that Del Piero & Schillaci have better World Cup records than Gascoigne.

Gash.

Wrong. Gascoigne was a contributor to Englandneworder’s “World In Motion”, which is the finest ever World Cup record.

FFS

 1. El Diego
 2. Pele
 3. Cruyff
 4. Beckenbauer
 5. Garrincha

Good shout Fagan. Lev Yashin was/will be hard bet as well. An excellent keeper, only matched in the modern era by the illustrious @Rintintin and the recently injured/retired @Bandage

Bobby charlton will surely finish high up any English paper’s list.
Would pele not be a cert to finish higher than maradona if they are judging on world cups given he was a key man in two wins rather than one? The main argument for maradona being better than pele is their respective club careers and the Brazilian’s failure to test himself in Europe.

I’m pretty sure Pele won 3 world cups and was a key man in all 3 making him the greatest world cup player ever.

I guess the counter argument is that Pele was part of better teams. Without Maradona, Argentina wouldn’t have come close to winning the 86 World Cup.

I know you’re old Scrunchie but out of those I would say you remember Maradona.
