It could have gone either way.
In the early rounds the Germans made short work of the Danes, Belgians and Dutch and while they came in with high hopes pre tournament, French flair was no match for the Germans high tempo geggenpressing.
The English put in a backs to the wall performance and were well able for anything the Germans threw at them in the air, and they had no way through the English central channels. Which left them firing speculative shots from long range. The English never threatened to counter, but were happy to take the stalemate.
Soon the Germans would again struggle this time with Russia’s very cautious deep lying block. They were ultimately caught on the counter after they had spent themselves crashing into the Russian defence over and over with no breakthrough.
Meanwhile in group 2. The Japanese got off to a great start. But everyone knew ultimately it would come down to themselves and the US. Japan got off to a strong start with a surprise early lead, but you knew they needed to be further ahead at half time to reflect their early dominance. Ultimately the USA’s greater strength in depth told and they ran out comfortable victors in the end.

Arra… once industrial hardware was introduced it’s fairly boring and these large scale wars are snoozefests…There’s nothing like the skullduggery and subterfuge in smaller / pre industrial warfare. As someone that’s part gaelic Irish, part Lakota and part Zulu - i find myself drawn to the stuggles of native people’s fighting against more advanced invaders.
