Yet More Glory For The Eastern Seaboard, Leinster and Wexford

First there was the beautifully regenerated quayfront, then the sensational newly renovated Opera House and now Wexford is the cleanest town in Ireland. It really is a golden age for Wexford. Compliments indeed to Wexford Borough Council for their strict adherence to the Litter Management Plan. Locals should also take a bow for having pride in their wonderful place and keeping our historic streets clean.

Record number of towns ‘litter free’

Monday, 15 June 2009 08:55

A record 41 Irish towns have been declared ‘litter free’ in the latest survey by Irish Business Against Litter.

However, none of our major cities were considered clean to European norms.

Wexford is Ireland’s cleanest town, according to this survey, ahead of Ennis, while Athlone and Mallow are the country’s litter blackspots.

But Irish cities do not fare so well - Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Waterford are all graded ‘littered’ and Galway ‘moderately littered’.

Inspectors found the main culprits were supermarket carparks, with Tesco, Dunnes and Costcutter the main magnets for litter in different areas.

The Irish Business Against Litter group says it is concerned that local councils are cutting back by as much as 750 per week on their cleaning budgets, and how this will impact on tourism.

Complete lies there.

Kilkenny are something like 55th in this survey, you’ve scored a rare big win over us here,i have to admit that i was thinking to myself reading the list on the indo this morning that i dont see much litter thrown around Kilkenny when im in there.Maybe thats the problem,us Kilkenny folk should be going looking for it and cleaning it up.COngrats anyway your obviously very proud of this accolade.

Very, very proud, Link. Litter is something that bugs me terribly. I think of the great Wexford men who gave their lives attempting to defend our sacred streets in the face of Cromwell’s machine of terror and it sickens me when I see abandoned taco fries strewn all over the ground outside Abrakebabra. That’s offensive to their memory and I probably would have eaten the fries if they were offered to me too.

Where did Waterford Town feature in this?

That dirty shithole came in 52nd of 60 surveyed,Kilkenny were better at 51st,its a poor result but beating Waterford town was some consolation.

The old order still in place at least link.

Nice to see Dublin still No.1 on the cleanest cities list.

They obviously forgot to visit Clonard

Clonard is Wexford’s shame. I hate the place and those bastards.

where do you stand on giving false statements to Gardai?

You’ll like this one tho’: It was a Sgt MULDOON that gave evidence against Enniscorthy native Ban Garda Niamh O’Connoer

I have no opinion one way or the other on it, Maire. This is an honour bestowed on Wexford town and it’s nothing to do with lesser towns such as Enniscorthy. Niamh O’Connor’s from Rathnure by the way but I’m not sure what that’s got to do with Ireland’s cleanest town either.

Sorry to piss on your parade Bandage but you must remember this is a partitionist list. If it were done on an all Ireland basis I can’t see anything other than a victory for Ballyeaston.

Point noted and well made larry. I’ll refer to Wexford as the cleanest unoccupied town in Ireland from now on.

I’d rather you called it a regional winner to be honest Bandage. You are right to celebrate your victory and it is a noble achievement. I must caution however that when you come up against the big guns like a Newry or even wee Ballyeaston in the All Ireland face off then I think you southerners will be shown up.

I was very impressed with Bready on my way to Donegal a couple of summers ago larry.

Thanks. Not overly surprised though. The cricket club is a fine feature in the town. Still I’d go for Ballyeaston over the Strabane district.

Niamh O’Connor is some nut job, just there on TV3 about her.

great to see the town getting such a great acheivement…
