Putin knows America is weak and doesn’t give a fcuk. He called their bluff on Syria and won. Russia and China together are the new world order and we all better get used to it.
Western democracies outsourced their power to the highest financial bidder and now are being laughed at by the real superpowers. Just like the Credit bubble that had no money in the West, these veiled empty threats have nothing but bluster to back them up.
Putin for all his faults is man of action, unlike almost every Western leader. When Georgia tickled his belly over South Ossetia he cracked the preoverbial hazelnut with a sledgehammer. Whether you agree with that or not its real leadership, unlike the strongly worded letter respone you’d get from an EU leader.
The real losers here are of course the many innocent Ukrainians who will die as a result of this.
[I]Russia has told Ukrainian forces to surrender its control of the strategic Crimean region by 3am on Tuesday or face military assault, amid the worst diplomatic crisis since the Cold War.
The forces in the region are also demanding that the crew of two Ukrainian warships in Sevastopol harbour surrender within the hour, or face being stormed and seized by Russian forces.
Relations between East and West continued to plummet as the Russian Government continued to ignore calls from Western leaders to leave the Ukrainian area.
This morning, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, justified the military incursion claiming it was necessary in order to protect his country’s citizens living there. “This is a question of defending our citizens and compatriots, ensuring human rights, especially the right to life,” he said.
It followed claims from the Ukrainian Defence Ministry that Russian fighter jets had “violated” the country’s airspace over the Black Sea overnight and that Russian forces were now in control of the port city of Sevastopol, where the Black Sea fleet is based.

This might actually kick off.
What kind of a time is 3am anyways?
It’s completely inconsiderate to TV audiences, if they were taking this thing seriously it would have been set for 9pm GMT.
That’s mental. The Russian’s seem to have provided a very vague rationale for their invasion to the wider world which gives them some scope to pull back if necessary. ‘Normalisation’ could mean just about anything.

The war will be over when we wake up, just the way they want it.

Didnt gulf war 1 kick off at 11pm or midnight gulf time?
It was around 11pm our time - there was a newsflash on ITV during the highlights of a Rumbelows Cup quarter-final between Leeds and Aston Villa. Big Lee Chapman was on fire that night - his aerial threat completely overpowered Paul McGrath and Kent Nielsen and Leeds won 4-1.
Poor old Dr. Jo had a miserable time of it that season with Villa, after having guided Czechoslovakia to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Italy. His predecessor Graham Taylor, would, of course go on to have an even more miserable time as England manager.

Good post. Putin has the west well sussed. Obama’s foreign policy in so much as one exists is ad hoc and impotent. Eamonn Gilmore has just ‘strongly condemned Russia action’ there on six one, that’s the crisis sorted so.

The head of the Ukraine Navy has defected and declared his allegiance to Crimea.
Despite emerging triumphantly from the shadows of their traditional oppressor in the early 90s, they now have an old, creaking and obsolete rearguard which is ill-equipped to deal with the devastating firepower of a resurgent Red Army, who are rapidly recapturing the glory days of the 1970s and 1980s that most observers thought had long gone.
Since the recent departure of their hated dictator, they lack any sort of leadership, are completely divided and are ravaged by infighting. Confusion abounds, nobody knows who’s in charge. Despite being on their home turf it’s hard to see them doing anything other than meekly surrendering.
This thing is exactly like the upcoming Manchester United v Liverpool match, when you think about it.
its fucking crazy allright, also they are looking to protect their “interests”
whilst i was delighted that the whole protest movement thing was seen to be a right sham and that it does not reflect all the population because there is a very sizeable anti EU / pro Russian element in Ukranian society that SKY / France24/ BBC choose to ignore two weeks ago its madness but somewhat admirable that the Russians feel they can just intervene in a country’s domestic issues as it dosen’t support their foreign policy.
Imagine if Mexico decided to invade Arizona, southern California and New Mexico because they didnt like that fact the existing government who may have supported hispanic trade and policies was kicked out? Imagine if Jordan tried to invade Israel because the Israeli Arab population didnt like another right wing government?.. Id love if the paras hammered the shit out of the Scots, but then again that’s not a country.
If the Russians are so concerned tho should set up refugee camps in along their own borders to help all the Russians who want to flee Ukraine now that a pro european governement is being estabished
Brian Dobson to Eamon Gilmore. What sanctions will the EU impose on Russia if they dont withdraw their troups.
Gilmore: We will stop discussions with Russia over VISA’s because their delegates bring it up in meetings. FFS talk about bringing a pen knife to a nucleur war fight.

I’d say yer man is shitting it now
What should his response be?
Russia’s UN envoy has said ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has asked Russia to use military force in Ukraine. Vitaly Churkin said in a speech at the UN that Mr Yanukovych had made the request in writing to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Use military force against who? The Ukrainian population?
Even for the hyper-reactionary, ball scratching militarist scumbags in the Russian establishment this all seems a bit much. The interim government, as far as I can tell, seem quite moderate and centrist and are seeking to address legitimate grievances with respect to how the country is being run. Bar some loose enough talk about them moving closer to Western Europe, they don’t seem to have adopted and overtly anti-Russian posture at all.
