Maybe you should have put in a submission
That just reads so fucking stupid. It’s taking revisionism to a whole new level.
“Revisionism” i.e. I don’t want to debate you
Would you have a problem with Wolfe Tone, Robert Emmet or many of the Fenians of the 19th century being talked about around this period?
What about Jesus Christ or Brian Boru? All interesting characters. Nothing to do with 1916.
You didn’t answer the question
Fucking Redmond on a banner for the 1916 rising. Satire is either dead or running the world.
Apologies if my answer was too cryptic for you. Let me make it more obvious:
I don’t have a problem with anybody talking about anybody else. I wouldn’t think a 1916 commemoration should be commemorating Tone or Emmet however.
Then you are an idiot. They are integral to understanding 1916.
1916 did not happen in a vacuum.
I’m definitely not an idiot.
Of course it didn’t happen in a vacuum. But it is a specific event. It happened in 1916 and Daniel O’Connell is nothing to do with that specific event.
It is a specific event that is, as we all we all probably agree, the most important event for Ireland in the 20th century.
The Government, RTÉ, history departments in Universities, political parties ect are putting good money into this as a one off. Understanding the context and how you got to 1916 is as important as learning about how Pearse was a schoolteacher.
It is complete stupidity. It is absolutely right that in a programme of events that you give people the full picture. If anyone here did history in school they would have learned about the build up to 1916. The loss of Grattan’s Parliament, Catholic Emancipation, the Home Rule movement, Ulster’s Resistance, World War 1 ect - this is Irish history and helps people to understand how that event came about. The signatories of the Proclamation, the week of the Rising ect are getting plenty of airing across the board.
If it wasn’t Redmond on that picture this wouldn’t have been noted on here though by the Rastoolers who all like to think they would have been in the GPO.
There is legitimate reason to link Tone and Emmett to 1916. 1916 was an armed insurrection with the goal of establishing an Irish republic. Tone and Emmett led armed insurrections in 1878 and 1803 and like the 1916 leaders both lost their lives due to their efforts. None of the 4 on the obnoxious poster supported armed insurrection, so have no connection whatsoever to 1916 or the history of Republicanism in Ireland starting with Tone.
It is an insult to all those who faught and in particular gave their lives in legitimate armed struggle to have these quislings associated with their efforts. What an absolute shower of wankers FG are.
Would you have been one of the group waving union flags and spitting at the signatories of the proclamation as they were led away by the armed British forces, Tim?

800 years of oppression pal, the Home Rulers failed, that’s all the context that’s required.
Wrong, wrong, incorrect.

I don’t know
A deeply Catholic rising
O’Connell wanted Ireland to be a little England, his whole philosophy for Irish society was based on middle class England. He was instrumental in getting rid of the Irish language, tho he spoke it himself, and wanted to assimilate the peasantry into little Englanders, all proud of their Queen… He was one of the greatest cunts this country has seen.
@Little_Lord_Fauntleroy has information relating to Daniel o’connel and his role in the suppression of Robert emmets rebellion that will shock this forum to its core.
He came across this information when researching on behalf of tfkbrecsc . I don’t wish to sound alarmist but this information could potentially derail the free state as it currently exists.
David Drumm will be back for the parade.
Will be nice for him to leave a country where he was treated like a criminal and put in jail.
He will have a much easier time in Ireland.
Second level history books are filled with hidden agendas.
Fixed that for you Tim. As for your comment about symbolism, you’re close to the money there pal
