2016 All Ireland Under 21 Football Championship

Dublin played Laois in Laois last year?

Fair point. But.

Not a semi final
Why is one semi final neutral and the other not?

Don’t know why, but if Wexford had beaten Westmeath the semi-final would have been Wexford

I presume if Wicklow had beaten Laois the semi final would have been in Nowlan Park.

My understanding is that some counties have a Home/Away Agreement and some don’t.

We must look and see if that applies in the Senior Championship as well.

I’m not opening that can of worms again!

What are Laois like. I saw Dublin v Meath. We are decent but nothing like recent u21 teams. Con O Callaghan was v good but if you took him out of it we wouldn’t score a whole pile

Forwards are very good, as good as we’ve had in a decade, but we’re wide open at the back and libel to get torn to shreds. In a shoot out, we’d most likely fancy our chances, but I suspect Dublin would shut down the space in front of Lowry and Moore and dog O Carroll all day, and that’d be that.

Dublin backs didn’t inspire confidence v Meath. They could have conceded 3 or 4 goals but got away with it. Sounds like it could be high scoring

I thought these were home and away. Could have something to do with lack of floodlights. Offaly had to play a home game in Portlaoise at this level a few years ago as their floodlit pitches weren’t deemed up to scratch.

It’s at 2pm

I was referring to the other game. I’m presuming Dublin have a home draw against Laois.

Surely the other game could be played on Sat too then

Yeah I had thought it was to do with all these games being on Wednesdays and flood lit too. Kildare Wicklow offaly Louth have all bother getting home games from memory. Think Wexford got a game switched to them one year as opponents didn’t have lights. So I don’t get why laois aren’t home and also why it’s on a Saturday

Laois aren’t at home because they played Dublin in Laois last year. I’ve no idea why their match is on a Saturday

is there any chance we could get this home and away thing to work at senior level perhaps?

Sounds like a plan as long as no trips to always windy Salthill involved.

Or one home game, ever, would be a start for some counties

No, you said there’s a home and away agreement in place between Laois and Dublin, seems it doesn’t count for Senior, which is convenient. The one with Offaly counts for all grades.

We open our defence of our Ulster and AI u21 titles this evening away to Cavan. Very tough game and draw to this for Tyrone. The winner has to play Donegal or Derry in the semi so it’s the tougher side of the draw by a distance.

Of last year’s team, we still have Fox, Burns, McShane, Kavanagh and Brennan underage. McGlone who came on as a sub in that game is still eligible and DD Mulgrew, who is part of the senior set up, is in his first year u21. Mulgrew is involved in a school’s final tomorrow so will not be available.

We don’t have any of last year’s defence available and despite being favourites for Ulster I wouldn’t be very confident. People will fancy Tyrone on the basis of last year’s triumph and the fact that this team were runners up in the 2013 minor AI. However 10 of that starting side are now overage and the best player from the 2013 side is now playing over in the AFL.

We do have the luxury of being able to rest up the U21s involved with the seniors for this. I think we’ll scrape past a good Cavan side tonight but Donegal will take us in the next round. I’m backing Donegal to win it outright.
