2016 Allianz National Football League

Beginning to think Donegal under Gallagher are a busted flush, nothing really fluid toward their attack at all.

Hugely reliant on Murphy and Ryan McHugh now.

That’s bad news for Ulster football as with the honourable exception of Donegal, Ulster has been more or less at the level it was at through the 70’s and 80’s.

Since when, Jeff?

Ulster are the only team who haven’t had one county dominate it over the past 6 or 7 years.

Munster football is Kerry.

Leinster football is Dublin.

Connacht football is Mayo.

Ulster football is a myriad of teams who make it to the business end of the AI series every year.

Its like the Premier League this year. Loads of even teams and no one or two outstanding teams while the better teams from other provinces/countries will beat them when it matters

The last few weeks have reinforced the impression that it’s impossible to look past Dublin, Kerry and a push, Mayo for the All-Ireland.

Poor analogy, every province is guaranteed one team in the AI series (QF onwards), out of the teams who come through the mixed side of the draw, Ulster has had the following composition in the past three seasons:

(3/4)
(2/4)
(3/4)

To come through Ulster you need to expend a lot, the other big sides from the shit provinces can safely pace their season for August, Ulster teams do not have that luxury.

Dreadful advert for league football, this, between the two games. Training session stuff with an atmosphere to match.

Really poor, the league system is a joke and some people want it to count toward Championship?

That fat baldy roaster should have been sent off there.

The league is what it is, a secondary competition. Over the last 20 years or so secondary competitions in most sports have declined in importance with the focus only on the big prize, and so it is in senior, inter-county GAA.

That’s not an indicator of strength. Between Down’s All Ireland wins of 1968-91, Derry in 1975-76 were the only county to retain the Ulster Championship. Despite the fact that the Anglo Celt Cup was going around between the counties like a game of pass the parcel, the standard of Ulster football was appalling.

Incidentally, the Ulster championship has been dominated by two counties for the past 5 years. The last three Ulster Finals have been Donegal v Monaghan finals. Cavan v Down 1967-69 was the last time the same pairing featured in the final three years in a row. The UK counties have just fallen off a cliff competitively since the demise of Tyrone football, post 2008.

Tyrone have made AI semi finals in two of the last three years despite being unable to win a game in Ulster in both those campaigns.

50% of O6 counties have contested All Ireland quarter finals in the past 2 seasons. If that’s what you call football falling of a cliff in that region then it tells you an awful lot about the high standards they have to strive toward.

The much vaunted Roscommon team of today haven’t managed a Championship victory in Croke Park in 36 years.

Not a pretty scoreline for Donegal. A hammering like this will dent confidence going into the championship.

Dublin and Kerry will warm up for their All-Ireland semi-final on August 28th by playing off for the title of League champions on Rising Day, April 24th.

Could be a good game but I won’t be losing any sleep over the result either way and neither will the players.

Dublin paying for the gym at the abbotstown centre of excellence is a nice gesture to help other counties come up to their level

No Ulster title for one of the UK 6 in 6 years. That hasn’t happened since Cavan’s 7 in a row from 1939-45. Not even a UK representative in an Ulster final in the past 3 years. That hadn’t previously happened since the 1920’s.

In the 7 seasons since Armagh & Tyrone’s golden 7 season period from 2002-08, Down’s flash in the pan losing appearance in 2010 is the only UK representation at the business end of the championship on the third Sunday in September.

The GAA have announced that to save everyone the time, expense and bother that the league final will double as the All Ireland final.

think tyrone will go well this summer…also think the league final is a massive game for Kerry…they need to beat Dublin in croker in a somewhat meaningful game…and I think they will in final
