Yeah I get that, but its just the reasoning being that Dublin are considered one of the best of all time, and Mayo are a shower of bottlers, yet in 3 finals only one point separated them and arguably Mayo left it behind them in 2 of those games and were the better side for the most part. Iād consider Dublin great for their will to win, win at all costs mentality and for being able to drag themselves over the line. But for some fine margins then that Mayo side could be the ones being argued as the best of all time. Iāve no real issue with Dublin being lauded, I just find it peculiar enough considering there has been very little between them and Mayo.
In saying that, take Mayo out and no one has come close to the Dubs. Donegal had flashes against them but no consistency.
I completely agree. Dublin are a great team no doubt, but overrated in terms of their āgreatnessā. They have gotten every lucky break and have gotten the benefit of a number of dodgy and highly impactful referee calls in two finals where they squeaked over the line by a point. Any of a number of those calls go the other way and itās highly questionable whether they win those games.
you can take the nembo black and white viewpoint or you could look at the games between them. 3 one point wins. No one has come as close to the Dubs as consistently over the past few years. Still and all, they found ways to lose/Dublin found ways to win.
Champions find a way. Of course you could dig up all the advantages, but at the end of the day, its 15 v 15, and Mayo came up short and will have have to deal with that. And itāll be that way until they get over that line, by whatever means necessary.
Ah no, wouldnāt agree with that. Theyāve won 3 in a row, 4 in 5 years. They may have squeaked over the line in the finals but they did enough to win and thatās what great teams do. You have to consider how far ahead of everyone else they are too. Theyāve absolutely hammered teams that were considered decent before their match. They have multiple FOTY on their bench. They are a great team.
In saying all that, fistyball is some load of kack but thatās not to take away from Dublin.
I think these shoulda/woulda arguments are a bit silly but sure Iāll have a go. Dublin play the situation very well, no matter what it is. They are generally calm and focused under pressure. So if, for example, Mayo had got their penalty and scored it, then Dean Rock probably doesnāt calmly fist a ball over the bar when heās racing in on goal with a couple of minutes left.
Dublin were quite happy to win by a point and believed once they were one up that they could keep the ball away from Mayo. And the did it.
I have to say I really enjoyed the final.
Football is like the girl who had a curl right the middle of her forehead, When itās good itās very very good, but when itās bad itās horrid.
