2018–19 UEFA Nations League and UEFA 2020 qualifying thread

I predict rice won’t make England squad for the euro’s.

What match was this?

Some mickey mouse tournament the Poms bottled it in.

I figured as much. A Mickey Mouse tournament. I only really tune it to international soccer for the World Cup.

Liverpool are coming for KT
Nice back up for Robbo.

It should be a great third place play off between England and Switzerland

I didn’t see any of that game but I’ll bet anything it went as as follows

England’s plan was to sweep the Dutch aside in the first half with a high tempo game

And it probably sort of worked for the first half, but they didn’t kill off the game and just had the one goal lead

Because England are not nearly as rehearsed in their high tempo tactics as a Premier League team, their running became subject to the law of diminishing returns after half time, and their co-ordination became ragged

As England tired, the Dutch took control of the game as they are superior technically

The game is effectively now tactics-free and the team with the superior technique and ability to retain possession has the advantage

The Dutch inevitably nicked an equaliser

In extra-time they took full charge

This pattern tends to repeat over and over again for England - it did against Colombia and Croatia in the World Cup anyway and in previous tournaments also

I think they’ll face a significant problem going forward in terms of translating the sort of high tempo Premier League type system of play that can sweep continental teams aside, to international football

International teams don’t get enough time to put such systems in place

And the odd player who is comfortable in possession doesn’t go amiss either

The Dutch controlled the game from start to finish. England got a spotter completely against the run of play.

I read this and thought you were having a laugh . You weren’t .

Sid totally wrong, holland totally on top in first half.

Another game??? Fucks sake.

Sid knows as much about a game when not watching it as he does when watching it

Flat track bullies.

When is the last time England have beaten a World Cup winning country in a major international tournament?

If you say England are flat track bullies, it doesn’t say much for Italy given they didn’t even qualify for the World Cup while England reached the semis

Amazingly, you have to go back to the World Cup in 2002 to find the last time England beat a fellow World Cup winning country in a major tournament, beating a poor Argentina team thanks to a pelanty conceded by Pochettino.

We have our ups and downs.
