Kerryâs success was a generational thing though was it not?
Dublin have very good parts but they achieve synergy like no other team. That is down to the system and culture they have created.
The break up Dublin theory is all fine and dandy but there are a few issues
- hurling
- would the new entities get support and sponsorship
- the legacy of the current Dublin will effectively be ruined
The problem is that there will be a huge drop in attendances going forward . The Final replays and the lockdown had the effects of covering up a problem
Im not advocating breaking Dublin up but if attendances fall, it will happen. Sport needs to be competitive or people wont watch.
The creating the culture / synergy thing is generally said of any dominant team even those with hugely obvious advantages
The legacy of the current Dublin team owes itself to HQ intervention and disproportionate funding.
Fact Dublin has won one minor in 20 odd years adds substance to it.
They are better coached and players selected suit their system.
That has been a huge factor but HQ have never come near to acknowledging this . A break up would change that
They are pro athletes in an amateur game.
Too many company men in the GAA punditry who wonât call it out.
Limerick havenât won a minor hurling AI since 1984 .
Nah. They have logistical advantages but Iâm not having the above.
Again goes to point that they are better coached and play a system that maximises their strengths.
They have ENORMOUS logistical advantages
Im not denying that.
Exactly but that donât come cheap
They have huge advantages even with Central and Government funding .
Kerry were a team of loveable ould rogues, Jacko, the Bomber, Mikey, Ogie, Paidi and so on. Theyâd score a goal and then wink at you. Yerrah, the public outside of Dublin loved them and they had the beating of Dublin who the Muldoons despised even more so in those days. Maybe they were hated in Cork too now that I think of it.
We had joy we had fun we had Kerry on the run but the fun didnât last because the bastards were too fast.
To the tune of Seasons in the Sun
There were occasionally articles in the Sunday Press remarking on the year that Kerry beat Clare 9-21 to 1-9 in the massacre at Miltown Malbay and that was the most anyone had scored against Kerry that year.
But they had fans up and down the country. I remember my uncle giving out that when they came to Carlow to play them in some game or other some local grandee showed up in a Kerry hat. Sure that was the way it was in those days. Yerrah.
They will lose eventually. God knows when though.
They will
If Kinnerk was with Cork or Kilkenny or Galway they would improve exponentially. Look at how Waterford were transformed under Beavens and Cahill.
