Whatever way you tally up the All Ireland wins over any prolonged period of time in modern times, its the teams in the Leinster Championship leading the way.
Last 15 years, its Leinster 9 Munster 6
Last 20 years, its Leinster 12 Munster 8
Last 25 years its Leinster 14, Munster 11
Last 30 years its Leinster 17 Munster 13
Last 35 years its Leinster 18 Munster 15, Connacht 2
Last 40 years its Leinster 21 Munster 16 Connacht 3
Last 45 years its Leinster 23 Munster 19 Connacht 3
Last 50 years its Leinster 25 Munster 22 Connacht 3
Maybe there is merit in @PhattPike cry for help to assist the Munster teams by playing All Ireland finals outside of the national stadium and in provincial Munster venues.
But lets take a holistic approach, minor finals and club finals are also played in croker, surely munster fair out much better there over the last few decades and balance this out?
There’s one behemoth in hurling in modern times - Kilkenny. Tipperary and Cork All Ireland wins over the last 50 years are not too far ahead of the likes of Offaly, Galway and Clare.
In the last 50 years Kilkenny have won 19 All Irelands. That’s two more than the combined tally of 17 that Cork and Tipperary have won between them. And two of that tally of 17 between Cork and Tipperary are 49 and 50 years ago in 1970 and 1971.
Actually, I included Wexford’s two wins from the 60s here; I went back 60 years instead of 50. 6-5 would be the tally, including Galway as a “Leinster” county for 2017
The Munster club malaise goes back a lot further than that. Munster clubs have won 4 of 32 All Ireland clubs since 1988. Three of those four final wins were recorded over opposition from Antrim. Leinster clubs in that period have won 15 and Galway clubs have won 12.
If anything you’re doing down Kilkenny there. They’ve retained the All Ireland on 8 occasions since 1982. Its incredible to think that Tipperary haven’t retained the All Ireland since 1965. Even Galway have done it since then, in 1988.
