Poor soft tackies. Most strenuous activity as a teenager was waving union jacks and taking a dip in the slime river in togher. In primary school teaching at 22, never having made a hard decision in his life.
I see Jackie Tyrrell has highlighted Damien Reck, Paudie Foley and Rory OâConnor in his Irish Times column today as our main men. As mentioned before, they barely played any championship games between them last year through injury (Reck), year traveling (Foley) and Leaving Cert (OâConnor). I think OâConnorâs appearance against Waterford in the quarter final was the only championship appearance made by any of the trio. Add Kevin Foley into the mix too, albeit heâs disappointed a bit against Galway and Kilkenny.
Assuming (though it is never safe to do so) that these lads can maintain that level of form/performance, what we really need is some of our experienced players and leaders to pick it up by 15%-20%. I think OâHanlon, OâKeeffe, Chin and McDonald all received All Star nominations last year, but each of them has arguably been below that level so far. We them back up there and a little bit better to push on.
I was encouraged by David Dunneâs re-emergence against Kilkenny. I think his sheer pace and unpredictability is valuable, but I retain concerns about our goalkeeper, the absence of one more specialist man marking defender and our lack of size around the pitch. Joe OâConnorâs statement display for the U21s in midweek will hopefully push him into the matchday 26. Itâs been apparent for a while that Davy doesnât trust many outside his first 15 so we could do with getting another viable bench option or two.
We just need to get that home province quarter final in Nowlan Park now after playing Munster opposition in Munster venues in 3 quarter finals in the last 4 years.
I would assume that Limerick v Galway/Kilkenny and Wexford v Clare/Cork will be a double header in Thurles or possibly Cork if Cork and Galway win the provinces.
Letâs hope Cork stuff the shit out of Clare so this weekend⌠Aside from being just over the road from me, the Pairc is a grand spot to watch a game.
Everyone is invited round to mine for beers and canapes pre match. -
Cheddar was discussing managerial styles on Parkinsonâs podcast and happened to mention Animal Farm. Wooly confirmed he had seen the film. Cheddar said he hadnât seen it but presumed it was a good one. Cheddar is great to listen to. He was going on about performance measurement and KPIs when they were discussing existing Clare and future Waterford managers. I know RTE donât have the time for such in depth analysis but a bit more insight than âheâs a wristy hurlerâ or âTipp donât like it up 'emâ shouldnât be too much to expect.
