Is he from Wexford? Ya couldn’t have a Wexford man refereeing a Kilkenny game
I hope they give it to James McGrath. He’s the best in the business right now.
Fair enough, I’m probably just attuned to the cynicism of the modern game. Apologies to Ritchie and all of KK if it was genuine.
People seem to think cramp is a sign of poor conditioning, and while it can be, it can also be a sign of giving more than you ever have before. And I think this may well be the case with Ritchie who I thought was immense. Really stood up when needed.
In reflection my admiration for both team has grown. Tipp for their belief and mental strength to keep going and incredible forward accuracy and KK for making the most of what they have. They really are stuck for a bit if dynamism. That may come if Mick Fennelly loosens up and has a better game the next day. TJ is a very athletic guy but seems at his most dangerous these days as a target man inside.
John O Dwyer reminds me of Leahy.
Overall there was a pile of mistakes and over cooked passing and from they POV the quality was down but the accuracy was fantastic and that alone made it exciting. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be a great game though, and was almost a carbon copy of Mayo-Kerry last week, with either side playing similar roles. KK being Kerry and Tipp being Mayo.
He’s coming to Australia to referee in the championships here. He is due to be here on the Tuesday Oct 1, so not sure if that will have any effect on his participation.
When was the last time a team scored 28 points against Kilkenny in the championship?
All to have a cut off Frank.

The penalties were very difficult calls to make as the fouls straddled the dividing line. Maybe marginally outside in both cases but very cynical and they could have no complaints. .[/QUOTE]
Agree with this, massively cynical fouls both occasions by KK glossed over in debate about inside or outside the box.
Can someone clarify point I am not sure of. For first pen, Maher fouled outside the box first, kelly can play advantage, then when Maher is dragged down in the square is he not entitled to award the pen for a 2nd foul committed whilst " on advantage"??

There’s no advantage in hurling. The referee can let play continue in hurling, but he cannot call it back afterwards. So in theory the whistle may have been blown for the second foul and not the first depending on what the referee’s thinking was, which is something we would never know anyway. Because he asked his umpire, it would suggest he blew for the first and wasn’t sure where in fact it took place.
In which case he is within his rights to allow play to develop, especially knowing a penalty is not half as much of an advantage anymore, until the attacker has been completely hauled to a stop, and make a decision then. The ref was outstanding. He asked the umpires on both occasions about the penalty decisions. He got one obvious call wrong for a single free for kk and, as usual, some of the supporters are weaving it into a global conspiracy. To hear kk lads complaining about helmet tampering makes me laugh. The helmet offence was part of a wrestle for the ball and whilst definitely a free and possibly a yellow, he called it right. It was not a red card offence in the circumstance.
Whatever about the cynical nature of the offences, to award a penalty for the second one was absolutely appalling. A top class referee should not be getting basic decisions like that wrong. Even with Tyrrell’s momentum he came to a complete stop a couple of yards outside the area after dragging Corbett down a few yards before that. I thought the referee was really shit yesterday.
How did yesterday compare as a shoutout with the 1990 final?
I thought he did well but watching it without benefit of a replay it looked clear to me that the foul for second penalty was way outside the area
He asked the umpire but it seems time to get proper umpires in for these games as the umpire was little or no help to him. That umpire called the very first point as a wide and it was given by hawk eye so from then on he was under pressure
As an aside I am surprised managers don’t watch the game from up in the stand - get a much better view of how teams line up and set up from there
You must have missed the bit where he went to the umpire and asked if it was a penalty, and was clearly informed that it was. Cynical fouling like that should either have the complete benefit of the doubt err on the side of a penalty, or be a straight red. There should be a huge deterrent if we want to see free flowing attacking. I thought he had no undue bearing on the result, let a lot go both ways, and as such was completely fair.
He should follow the rules. There’s no scope for the referee to say “ah, sure it was cynical enough - I’ll give a penalty anyway.” If he needed to consult with that umpire (who didn’t really seem to be very clued in throughout) for such a basic decision then he’s no business refereeing games of this significance.
That was some game yesterday, I decided to go along in the end and I’m glad I did.
My thoughts in random order:
KK keeper was bad for PBMs goal
I haven’t seen it back but I think Bonnar was at centre forward when he caught two in a row (scored the goal and won and penalty)? He ended up in the corner shortly afterwards which I thought was strange. He definitely moved further in. Hogan was in bother all day.
KK weren’t able for Tipp when they ran at them.
KK were unbelievably cynical when Tipp got near their goals (and rightly so in my book), Tipp were too honest down the other end.
I thought it very interesting that Hogan and Reid went on the line for the penos, they obviously practice stopping penalties a fair bit and have picked the two lads out as the best. The new penalty rule really makes it worthwhile to foul, I would say it was in KK’s game plan to give away 21’s and penalties when necessary.
Saying that KK were very clinical in finishing the goal chances they got, while Tipp missed at least 5 good goal chances.
Richie Hogan saved their bacon big time when he went centre forward. It was a masterclass.
Lar rolled back the years yesterday and it was great to see.
There was some unbelievable corner back displays on both sides yesterday.
Shefflin shouldn’t have been brought on (Walsh would have been the better choice when they needed to close it out). Neither should Kelly, saying that if Kelly was on 5 minutes earlier he would have stuck that penalty.
KK handled Callinan well forcing him to go away from goals to get the ball but he got some lovely scores from difficult positions.
Bubbles has been the find of the championship, unreal.
TJ Reids finish for the second goal was class, the speed he turned and hit it with was awesome.
The same umpire called for hawkeye three times  why not just get rid of the cunts altogether.
Overall I feel that Tipp left it behind them, there is plenty there to suggest they can take them the next day if they can stop leaking goals.
As an aside, KK people are horrible bastards. I went into the match as a neutral with mutual disdain for both sets of cunts, but I have come to the conclusion that KK are streets ahead of Tipp in the cunt stakes.
They were abusing Barry Kelly before the ball was even thrown in.
They were complaining about him riding them even though he let them off very lightly with their cynical defending.
They jeered at the Tipp lads whenever they made a mistake, and then threw in some very personal abuse at them.
Anytime they got ahead they were in the faces of the Tipp fans around me.
When they were behind they were jeering their own players.
This is my third such experience with KK people, a horrible clueless bunch.
I will be firmly supporting Tipp the next day.
Anyone else think last years drawn final was a better game than yesterday’s ?
I’m pretty sure JJ gave Callinan the butt of the hurley into the side of the helmet as they were waiting for a high ball to drop early enough in the first half. Was it picked up on TV or mentioned?
Yes.
I agree with most of what you’ve said there @Julio Geordio but I would disagree re Hawkeye, why not call for it instead of making a guess for which you and your referee will get murdered for by some yoke in a dickie bow later that night? In in doubt, use the technology when its there.
