It was an All Ireland Final and it ended in a high scoring draw between two of hurling’s big teams so already it ticks a lot of boxes to be a classic.
The way the scores came meant it wasn’t as dramatic as last years drawn final but I (as a neutral with a small bet on Kilkenny hedged at half time by a small bet on a draw) really enjoyed it.
There was a sense when it was over that this is definitely a Kilkenny team on the way down. Down may simply mean they are on the same level as everybody else and have lost that invincible aura. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are beaten easily the next day though - at times I thought Tipp had Kilkenny on the ropes and were a score or two away from giving them a real beating but credit to Kilkenny they kept working and working.
Why is the 2010 final rated so highly? It was a poor game with some soft goals and a generally shite performance from kilkenny. 2011 was suffocatingly intense, yesterday was better viewing, 2009 is miles ahead of all.
In fairness the last 3 Finals have all been thrilling. For the casual viewer that’s all they’re looking for really. Seasoned cold eyed cunts like us lads on here can and will always find holes to pick. Agree with Maroon above that 09 sets the standard for the modern era. I remember 2010 to be a fairly robust encounter as well, plus you had the whole Drive for Five narrative going on. Plus I was at it so clearly it was one of the best ever
What channel was the minor match on yesterday? I was in Gills and they had RTE 2 on but no minor game. I think it was the Fair City Omnibus or something like that. I’m assuming limerick won at their leisure after all the talk about them.
Do they not get TG4 in Dublin? I’m sure someone must have copped this and told the barstaff. There was a fair few KK fucks in the pub surely one of them might have told the lads
It was on in the North Star Hotel on Amiens Street which for any lads coming by train to Connolly is conveniently located and boasts a wonderful beer garden
I thought it was a great game rather than simply a good one, elevated to greatness by the second half. Maybe I’m easily pleased but I loved it, every minute, it made me forget for a while my overwhelming feeling of impending doom.
I enjoyed the game as a neutral and had a fine vantage point in 333 of the Hogan. Kilkenny most certainly aren’t the team they were before and were dead on their feet with a few minutes to go. Paddy Stapleton was under pressure for long periods but really stood up to be counted in the last 20 minutes while Barrett was excellent in the other corner. I was very surprised Walter Walsh wasn’t taken off at half time, he isn’t a corner forward for me, he needs to be running towards the goal to be effective. Richie Hogan was excellent for 10 minutes when moved to centre forward but was bested by Shane McGrath for long periods before McGrath and Woodlock ran out of steam early in the second half.
I was impressed with Lar Corbett and Noel McGrath yesterday, both had their best games in a long while for Tipp, Corbett was really up for it and was constatly showing for the ball in the second half when Kilkenny were on top and he caused Kilkenny a lot of problems when he ran at them.
I also thought Brian Hogan was well off the pace and was surprised he lasted the full 70. Looked heavy legged and slow/lacking confidence in his hurling

Agree with all of this, and its a testament to kk that despite this, they were clear favourites with ten to go.
Very accurate and concise summation, @chewy louie. The likes of @Lazarus and @Julio Geordio should sit beside you for the replay so you can explain to them what’s going on.
Also a lot of Tipp fans were critical of Gearoid Ryan yesterday and see him as the one who will be dropped the next day for Cahill. While things didn’t run for him and he should have buried that goal chance I thought he had a decent enough first half full of industry and did a lot of spoiling and competing for puckouts with the Kilkenny half backline
It was a great game. Good scores, good saves, evenly contested, incidents, a little controversy, great performances, a final, a significant game is the story of this decade, perfect conditions, full house, what more could you want?
Tipp should have won but did not get the goals from their chances, it is that simple.

Was looking like 2009 in the sense that Tipp were on top but was looking like missed goal chances would cost them. Showed good resolve and composure to pick off those last 3 points for the draw. They’ll win it easily enough in the replay. Too many old legs on that Kilkenny team and were carrying far too many fellows yesterday still trading off past glories.
has that psychopath @cluaindiuic shown up yet? Only for the man he spent the run up roaring and shouting about (Barry Kelly) awarded KK almost twice as many frees they’d have lost, Tipp only got 6 frees in the whole game despite having more possession.
