All-Ireland Senior Football Championship 2016 You Are What You Eat

Cillian O’Connor has an average of 0.5 points from play per match in his four All-Irelands.

That’s a total of 0-2, which both came two weeks ago.

Canavan could barely run in the 2003 final, don’t forget.

For full disclosure I’ll state that O’Connor carried a shoulder injury into the 2013 final and it’s believed he was carrying an ankle injury on Saturday last.

Why is all that directed at me?

I was merely responding to @backinatracksuit query about the scoring rate from play of Peter Canvan in All Ireland finals? I didn’t say a word, good, bad or indifferent there about Peter Canavan or Cillian O’Connor. In fact, I never mentioned Cillian O’Connor.

But he’s also a sneaky cunt who has dived and whinged to win a lot of those frees himself.

And for full disclosure on my own part I was genuinely asking as I couldn’t recall Canavan having a great game in 95 and it seemed odd that he scored all Tyrone’s points bar one.

i don’t recall much criticism of Canavan for only contributing one point from play in the 1995 final or for getting penalised for fouling the ball in the lead up to the disallowed Sean McLoughlin point right at the end which would have earned Tyrone a replay.

No doubt someone like @Nembo_Kid was probably highly critical of what in his eyes would be a measly return from play from Tyrone’s main scoring threat that day.

The comparison was made between O’Connor and Canavan and their scoring stats in All-Ireland finals earlier on the thread.

I referenced your post as you provided the stats from play for Canavan in All-Ireland finals.

Interestingly Maurice Fitzgerald has only scored 0-4 from play in three All-Ireland finals - an average of 1.33 points per match - granted he was a substitute in the two games in 2000, although a first half substitute in the replay.

Former Mayo manager James Horan may well be their most clutch performer in All-Ireland finals - he scored 0-11 from play in three All-Ireland finals in 1996/97 - an average of 3.66 points per game - and one of those was as a second half substitute.

Art McRory famously said after that he knew the GAA needed Dublin to win an Ireland but he never thought they needed it that much.

Colm Cooper’s stats from play in All-Ireland finals are impressive:

2002: 0-2
2004: 1-4
2005: 0-3
2006: 1-2
2007: 1-3
2008: 0-3
2009: 0-0
2011: 1-1
2015: 0-0

That’s a total of 4-18 (30 points) over 9 games for an average of 3.33 points per game.

Stats befitting of the best inside forward of the last quarter century. 2009 was an injury maligned year for him and as regards 2015 he hasn’t been the same player since his knee injury.

What did Padraic Joyce score from play in finals? Think it was 1-1 against Kildare in 1998, 0-1 against Kerry in drawn game in 2000 and 0-5 against Meath in 2001. Can’t recall what he scored in 2000 replay.

Joyce took 20 steps for his goal against Kildare.

Very sour grapes after his Tyrone team scoring a paltry 0-2 from play in the game.

Bomber Liston must have some scoring record from play in AI finals. Where does he stack up all time @Sidney?

0-2 from play is a shocking return considering we were still some way out from the blanket defences. Couldn’t expect to win an AI with that

1978 - 3-2
1979 - 0-1
1981 - 0-0
1982 - 0-2
1984 - 0-3
1985 - 0-0
1986 - 0-2

That’s 3-10 in 7 finals - an average of 2.7 points per game.

Zzzzzzzzz

Really interesting stats there.

No , that is for Friday nights in Tallaght .
