Nonsense. McGrath is a spoofer. Jim was a genius. He added layers and layers to his defense system. Donegals ability attack and counter attack was outstanding under him by the second year.
The top 3? Galway and tipp have won one all Ireland between them in the last ten years. Kk have 6. Please don’t mention them in the same category again.
Its not really in too much of a different place than it has been for most of its 130 odd years. A Big 3 that are well ahead of the mediocre rest. I know Galway haven’t won the Big One since 1988, but their performances across the grades have long since seen them displace Cork. I don’t think there’ll be too much in it between Galway and Tipperary, but I think Tipperary will just about shade it and then beat Kilkenny in the final.
You’ve just proved my point. Mcgrath has tried to implement Donegals system but does not yet realise that it won’t work in hurling, when you can pick off point a from the opponents 65 metre line. Different game
The top 3 teams at the moment obviously you cretin
Galway haven’t won for 28 years bud
It’s not Donegal system though. It’s completely different.
Arm grabbing and refusal of referees to police that, the steps rule and lads pitching the ball like it’s a baseball have made a mockery of the game. It’s all pulling and dragging and physicality at close quarters while being inconsistently refereed. A lad burrows into a defender, takes about 12 steps and gets a free. A minute later some chap is grabbed and pulled, deserves a free but is done for overcarrying. We need (in my best Michael Duignan voice) to bring back ground hurling, make the game 11-a-side and go man for man.
You hardly think KK play “conventionaly”?
It’s not even been that effective at stopping concession of goals recently. And not just with wford
Interesting to see how it would pan out if they did away with hand passing full stop
It must be pointed out kk are not playing a tradional way. They are actually closer to Waterfords style than a traditional game of old. They are a lot more fluid and only tend to use the system in bigger games they can beat most without it.
Ah maybe not traditionally but they’ll always have enough men forward and create goal chances. I don’t find their style boring or negative
@caoimhaoin, I’d broadly agree with that. He’s a very nice guy, and although I still have my doubts if that’s what is called for, I’ve heard some interesting things from training. I know the pitch invasion after the match was referenced above, but I wouldn’t underestimate the importance of the players seeing the fans are behind them and vice versa.
Today was a good example of a game galway would typically have lost - ahead at half time, pressure comes on, togs get shat. Even when Clare came back at them in the second half, they kept fighting for the dirty ball. Listening to post-match interviews on Galway Bay FM you could tell they put in a physical shift. Canning was earmarked for special treatment, none more obvious as when he went to shake hands with Brendan Bugler as he was going off and David Fitzgerald smashed him with a frontal shoulder. He stuck to the task.
One big thing that seems to have dropped from last year is the quality shooting. Cloonan had a very positive influence on it, so something to work on.
I’d disagree here. I think Clare with a proper manager would be in the mix with Galway and tipp. The likes of Limerick and cork simply don’t have the players it has nothing to do with systems or style of hurling. Waterford and Clare being criticised a lot of their “systems” but in reality Clare won an all Ireland 3 years ago which is more than most other counties have done in recent years. Waterford built a new team and won a league and got to a few Munster finals. It is a lot more impressive than the likes of Wexford, Offaly, Limerick, cork etc.
Their style of play inspired Clare and Waterford’s style, it’s just that Davy and McGrath can’t emulate the effectiveness of KK’s one.
Davy and McGrath can’t get their forwards to win their own 50/50 ball.
That’s the crux of both their problems.
Tipp have beaten the worst cork team in history, Limerick and Waterford in the last two years. Their form isn’t that special.
No it isnt
It’s a half arse attempt at it. But even if he was successful in implementing such a system, he still wouldn’t win a match against Tipp or Kilkenny. It’s all built around not conceding rather then scoring.
