Emmanuel Wanyonyi broke the 27 year old World Record of Noah Ngeny in Monaco last night in the rarely run 1,000 metres.
Rhasidat is a victim of expectations unfairly placed upon her
I thought it strange how quickly certain agencies of the state were to platform her in the absence of any globally recognised achievements over her fellow Irish even female athletes
I know she did well at u20 in Europe (2xGold) but in later years her trajectory had slipped - it was as a team member that she won gold in the Euros
RTE , DAA (those embarrassing photos in arrivals plastered on the wall and you overhear visitors saying WHO?) sports journalists etc own the pressure that was heaped on Rhasidat.
She’s unfortunate that she also appears to have been used to sell migration during social unrest. Trad media were just short of tattooing a tricolour on her forehead
Rhasidat should have been allowed to develop in Texas and left alone as other developing Irish athletes are. In time or never she could perform but without the pressure or faux hype and definitely not the politically driven side pressures
It’s one thing to have an injury and trying to recover it’s unfair to have the weight of a nation foisted upon you in your early 20s

My favourite lesser spotted world record here. Sonia O’Sullivan breaks the 2,000 metres world record at Edinburgh’s Meadowbank Stadium (home of Meadowbank Thistle) in July 1994. Yvonne Murray in her designated role of hanging onto the back of Sonia for as long as she can before Sonia pulls away, a neat metaphor for the historic trajectories of Ireland and Scotland as nations.

Josh Kerr with a time of 3.42.66 has broken Hicham El Guerrouj world mile record which stood for 27 years.
Scotland is so back as a country.
Great runs for Sarah Healy and Mark English too finishing 3rd and 2nd in their respective races. Both ran PBs
McPhillips did ok too. About 5th in the 800m in his first race of consequence in a while
Times mean nothing anymore, which is an awful pity
Between the shoes and the tracks it’s impossible to know where you stand.
El Gerrouj would probably go under 3:40 handy enough today, is Kerr even better than Coe or Cram

It’s like comparing a performance in a 48 team world cup with a world cup from the 70s. Barriers will continue to be smashed as technology advances and pharmaceutical developments find new ways around drug testing.
It’s like the 2 hour marathon barrier being smashed. I don’t think it made front page sports news. I’d wonder if Kerrs achievements will be the front of the UK papers or UK sports papers tomorrow. That gives a sense of how much it captures the publics care or attention.
A great day for Doctor English, McPhillips, Sarah Healy and then Emma Hickey and the other lass whose name I can’t remember who both won silver medals in the European U18 championships.
Not a good day for Rhasidat who pulled out of her 400m and likely won’t run in Birmingham now I assume. Not sure if there’s even another qualifying race for her to run in.
