Ausbloodystralia

I was only in WA for a couple of weeks but one of those weeks was spent on a bus that went from Perth to Exmouth and back and I fucking loved it. Mainly because it was so peaceful. The vast emptyness appealed to me. No sign of a McDonalds or any significant number of people for a week was nice.

GMan - I will certainly be doing a trip north before i leave. A couple of friends just came back and loved it. Been to Margeret River, very nice in ways and very snobby in others.

yeah I stayed out of the whole winery ‘tour’ setup there, and just travelled around really. I’d avise getting your own car and doing the driving yourself up north. can just take detours when it suits and go where you like when you like. go to places like the Hutt River Province and such. if you ever did fancy the Gibb River road, you’d need a 4x4. but it is a seriously class drive.

I suppose i should serperate Perth & WA. There are things to see and do in WA, and something like Gman and Piles describe appeals to me. Its Perth has nothing really though for the tourist and its very expensive to fly there relative to everywhere else in Oz. Its pretty untouched on the West Coast which is what it has over the East Coast, but for city life or even any kind of buzz at all Perth is one of the worst places i’ve ever been.

I had friends over who were considering coming over and i told them not to bother.

Mac, I did the following trip from April to June in 2005.

  • Melbourne to Adelaide - Great ocean road is excellent and there are some very nice towns along the way. Adelaide is a bit of a kip. Melbourne is a cracking spot by the way but it’ll be cold enough in June
  • Adelaide to Alice Springs - Alice Springs is a dump but it was cool enough to see Uluru and Kings Canyon.
  • Alice Springs to Katherine to Broome - Driving up the middle of Australia can be quite repetitive but is also a fairly amazing experience. Odd little towns lke Coober Peedy are a real eye opener as to how some people live. While cable beach is very nice, Broome is the oddest place I’ve ever been.
  • Broome to Darwin - Darwin isn’t a bad spot but is very isolated and a hence a somewhat insular. Didn’t get to see much of it or it’s people though as the town was on Cyclone alert. Went to Kakadu for 3 days thought and that was excellent
  • Darwin to Cairns - Cairns is a shithole. That is all
  • Cairns to Byron Bay - I really liked Byron Bay and I’d say you would too. Great beach, good restaurants and a fairly relaxed atmosphere. The Whitsundays are amazing and worth the visit. The day trip is probably enough though. If you’re interested in a smoke then Nimbin is a good laugh for a couple of hours. Don’t waste too much time there though.
Byron Bay - Sydney - Sydney harbour is unreal and the city is really cool but it just doesn’t have the same lifestyle as Melbourne

how does it compare to lahinch?

favourably

Was driving behind a Landcruiser today with a Shamrock on the back and the reg no IRL 32M (not sure what the M stands for).

Best one I’ve seen was EIRE32.

I’m thinking about getting WX1996 myself.

I’m getting very worried about Kev’s reaction to Australia Day which is next week.

Good ole Hawkey. As a result of this, the SCG has decided to re-introduce full strength beer

What does it represent, i really don’t know. Is it “independance”? Cos it had that until the white europeans came and took it away from the Australians. What does it represent? Anzac day i get, and is a noble day. BUt they really tried hard to hide true history and actual events over here. Its funny in ways.
