That’s it exactly. A larder is a pantry with a cold external wall I believe. The key challenge for pantry owners is keeping the floor free from odds and ends to enable optimum browsing.
I’m now leaning towards converting my fridge press into a utility press for various odds and ends and brushes etc and putting a freestanding fridge at the edge of the kitchen. It’s a massive call but I’m prepared to do it if I enjoy the general support of the forum.
If the fridge is not enclosed at all I’m not sure it will fit in with your apparently quite tasteful kitchen. Your options are limited with the unit the fridge is in at the minute though.
I think the poster called Mac hit the nail on the head earlier, you are probably best to move house
I now need to sort out the press where the fridge used to be.
I need a couple of planks of wood. Where would one get a plank of wood? Preferably of a specific size. Can you wander into a Woodies and ask them to cut you some wood. Do they even sell planks of wood in Woodies?
My experience of Woodies is that they’re not short of planks. As already indicated B&Q is the way to go here.
You would want to adhere to the old maxim “measure twice to cut once”. Have you a measuring tape for starters?
On the face of it that’s great advice. But I’m not sure I’d have the confidence to be going into a “trade” type place.
Also, should I give them the exact measurements of the space I want to fill? Basically, I have taken out a fridge from a press and need to put a floor on that press because the bottom isn’t solid. It will just be resting on top of an existing structure so I wasn’t planning on doing anything but placing it there. But if I measure the space as 55cm X 55cm for example should I ask for a piece of wood of exactly that size or get one that’s half a cm shorter on each dimension so that it fits in. I don’t want to bring something back that will be the exact size and won’t fit because I need to trim it. And then I’ll fuck that up.
Please don’t measure in metric. Any decent builders providers will be sniggering behind your back and charge you double for the timber if you do. What type of timber are you looking for?
But I need metric to be in any way accurate. It’s only a small square of wood I want, if I just do it in inches then it I think that would leave too big a gap.
No idea on the timber. Just something you’d make a shelf out of. Plywood or something?
They will have sheets of “shelves” there that they will cut to size. Also I’d have more confidence if your measurements were in mm. Will you also need something to support the shelf?
How will this piece be supported, were you going to screw it into the side pieces of the press? That mightn’t hold any weight. Sounds like a disaster in waiting.
Sorry, I didn’t explain this well. There is a board there. It’s just not occupying the full depth of the press. But it takes the full width and goes back 90% of the way. It just leaves a gap behind it. It’s not actually one piece. I think it’s made out of some sort of chipboard with a lino covering on some of it and then some of it is tile I think. Whatever it is, it supported a fridge-freezer. But because the fridge occupied the entire space you couldn’t see the cavity behind it. I now need to put one board across that will sit on top of the existing structure and fill the cavity at the back.
I want another couple of them for higher up to act as shelves but they won’t have much on them. This press will basically have sweeping brush, mop, that sort of thing in it and maybe a basin or two on the shelves.
