what colour is the shelf? Take a photo and post it here
Woodwork would not be my forté. Good Christ I was awful at that.
Rawl plugs?
the plastic sleeve that goes into the drilled hole in the wall so the screw can get a grip andnot come loose. Rawlplug is a company that makes these, so its kinda like hoover, jeep etc. standard wall plugs from other manufacturers are just as good.
go into woodies or B&Q or somewhere rocko and have a wander around. you will see lots of these things there, and there will be shelving units and other things that you could purchase which would save you have to make the shelf if your caprentry skills arent up to scratch. most brackets will come with their own screws and wall plugs, so its just a case of having the rigth masonry bit for the drill.
and make sure to wear the protective clothing like you did last night for the rad. hard hat and steel toe cap boots etc.
Rocko old chum, do you live in a semi-d perchance?
would this wall be adjoining another house, or is it an internal wall between 2 rooms?
if it’s the gable end, drill away, it’s probably concrete blocks covered with plasterboard. rawl plugs, couple of brackets and your shelf will be sorted.
if it’s between 2 rooms of the house, it may well be a metal cladding frame with plasterboard covering it, in which case you’ll need to find the cladding (probably 1 inch thick, spaced 12 - 18 inches apart at regular intervals) and drill into the metal rather than the plasterboard.
you can purchase handy lazer gadgets for this task, which may be more suited to your skill-set.
It’s a beautiful semi-d.
The wall is adjoining another house.
The shelf isn’t a piece of wood - it’s from IKEA. It’s something like this, not this exact thing but something similar:
half a dozen rawl plugs should do the job so, drill away, you’ve got at least a foot of wall to work with
let the father in law do it but help out and watch yourself so you can do it the next time
i am not good at diy but if you have a go at bits and pieces in out of the way spots like the utility room and that you will get the hang of it
Rocko,
It is extremely important to keep this room at the optimum temperature to protect your Celtic memorobilia from damage.
New problem with my gaff: trip switch kept tripping on Saturday and after plugging everything out I narrowed it down to the fridge. Plugged that out for a while, plugged it back in and I was fine.
No problems until today when the same thing happened again.
So, do I need someone to come and look at the fridge or do I need an electrician to look at the circuits?
If possible plug something else into that socket and see if it trips, at least then you will have narrowed it down to whether it is the fridge or the socket that is causing the problem
I’m such an idiot that I never thought of that. The problem is it may not trip it straight away so I’ll need to live without the fridge for a while to test.
Is there any other socket in the general vicinity to which you could plug in an extension lead to keep the fridge going while you test the other socket?
Whens it tripping rocko is it just randomly or what?
Can you remember the first time it happened was anything in particular happening?
Yes, but that solves nothing, cause if it trips how is he to know if it was the fridge or the other socket?
Unless you are talking about leaving the other socket empty while running the fridge on the extension lead.
Nothing out of the ordinary. I’d have a fair bit on - a laptop, a desktop, 2 televisions, router, modem, oven, digibox, fridge, few other small appliances plugged in - but that’s nothing that should trip the switch you’d think.
Took me a while to isolate the fridge, it was the last thing I tried because of awkward socket, so restarted it a dozen or so times and it tripped every time within about 20 seconds. Then once I plugged the fridge out it was fine. Plugged the fridge back in after 5 minutes and it was ok.
Even this evening when the problem repeated itself I tried a few things before the fridge in case that was just coincidence the last time but again it tripped after a couple of seconds every time until I plugged the fridge out. Plugged it back in and fine since.
You have a modern fuse board by the sounds of it? Just switches no fuses?
Either the fuse in the plug is gone, you’ve a problem with the socket or theres a more serious problem with your fridge.
I remember a socket causing trouble at home before, we had to get the electrician out and when he opened up the socket there was an electrocuted mouse inside there.
Is it the master trip or just one of the normal zone trips ???
Yeah it’s a rewired house with a modern board alright. Fridge not that old either though it’s inherited. I’ll change the plug on it (I’m skilled at that) which won’t do any harm anyway but fridge is fairly panelled away so might be awkward enough.
It’s a zone I think but all the sockets seem to be on the one zone except the washing machine and water pump.
