Broadband Provider

Or go €5 dearer per month for 500mb option.

Sky Broadband is the same as eircom but cheaper. It’s the same line.

I’ve had Sky BB for about 5 years now with no issues. I’m not in Fingal though

Is eircom not meant to be an absolute nightmare?

Sky, Eircom and Vodafone all use the same infrastructure.

First question to answer is where is your nearest connection point? They could connect you to one that is further away from your house. The further away it is the slower speed you get. The closest eir cabinet to me is about 50m from my front door but they initially connected me to one 10km away. Never forget that these people are lazy idiots.

Also, anything over 100mbps is marketing bullshit. Sure, it’s faster but you’re paying a premium for a scale you won’t reach unless you’ve 5 people streaming 4K at the same time.

Kinda like Sky telling you that you can record 6 things and watch a 7th at the same time. That has never happened ever in a practical sense. Bollocks.

As is Virgin Media “smart WiFi”. We manage your WiFi so you don’t have to. Eh OK, in 3 years I’ve spent virtually zero time managing WiFi so thanks for taking care of a non existent job. Charlatans.

It seems like there is no connection point for the estate as of yet… Horseshit. Anyone move into a new estate and experience this shit?

Where is the nearest one? 1 that is a KM or two away isn’t the end of the world.
Is there a planned one on the map? They are designated by colour.

There are 2 within a couple of hundred metres. But apparently sky and virgin say they cant connect as it’s Eir’s job to connect the estate. Whats the best way to connect to one of these cabinets?

Ah you’re fine so. We got the runaround on this too. Virgin don’t use this infrastructure so this isn’t anything to do with them. Whoever you pick you’ll be in a year contract with so choose carefully. If Virgin are available in your area they might be the best bet. They weren’t available in my area so we went with Sky. If you go Virgin you don’t need a phone line and all that jazz.

You could run your own cable form the house down to it. Once it’s touching the cabinet you should be good to go.

That’s just mean!

Who did you go with in the end? I got annoyed at Virgin media and cancelled it a month ago. Happy enough just working off my phone but the missus is complaining so I need to sign up to a new plan. I don’t want to go back to Virgin as a point of principle. Vodafone seems to be the best deal price wise followed by Eir. @Copper_pipe is it possible to still get set up with your man for the tv channels and is there any provider i should avoid? I torrent a lot of stuff is this also going to be affected depending on who I go with?

If you can get Virgin you should. Because it removes the need for a phone and line rental. I’d get their lowest broadband because all of the speeds these days are fairly redundant. Nobody needs much more that 50mbps. Anyone paying for top speed broadband are pushing in a thumbtack with a sledgehammer.

Outside of Virgin you need to figure out where your closest infrastructure is. If its more than a couple of km away I’d recommend for you to crawl back to Virgin.

No-one. Estate is only half-finished so the providers won’t open lines yet. We went on a 3 unlimited data deal and bought a modem (AJ Electronics in Swords-legends). Basically phone wi-fi sent around your gaff. It’s enough for netflix for the kids anyway. No tv package as of yet. Where are you?

Im in the city centre and theres an exchange across the road from the apartment so speeds shouldnt be an issue.

I’ve just switched to Vodafone as they got the top rating, and, on their best bundle the guarantee 50mb or refund. Its half the price of the last shower and thus far flawless.

When I said estate I meant housing estate not country estate.

How would you find out where the nearest infrastructure is? Would they be obliged tell you if you asked? In the countryside I suppose you could easily be 15-20km from one.

The link I posted above has the map.
