I was called early this year, went along in suit and was selected. Three of those selected were removed by objection but not me. The trial was pulled on a legal technicality on the third day.
At least 80 people turned, many were disappointed not be selected.
As many more names were called and had not shown up.
A five year exemption from serving again was not worth it.
Maybe @artfoley can let us know but as far as I know no one has every been prosecuted for not turning up to jury duty. Ignoring a first one especially would be no issue at all. Worst case scenario you could always say you werenāt living at the address when it came. Not that youād ever be called on it.
Your honour Iām a self employed professional gambler whoās main source of income is punting low grade handicaps midweek in Taunton and plumpton. I canāt afford to be caught up in a lengthy trial.
I have this coming up and I could really do without it at the moment as Iām working on a large project and already up the walls.
With the letter that was sent out was a slip where you could ask to be excused. I did that citing work commitments but the request was ānot acceded toā. Iāve already skipped one call, so Iām reluctant to just skip it again, but at the same time being caught up in something for 4 or 5 days would be a disaster for me at the moment.
On the other hand, your live posting of the trial could be just the shot in the arm this forum needs. Like an internet forum making a murderer but in real time.
