Only got to see second half but from what I saw St Pats would have beaten Celtic tonight.
Legia could still blow this. What kind of a team has a carthorse taking the penalties? Celtic an absolute shambles. Might be merciful if legia knock them out.
Player Ratings
Forster 7.5 - Might have been at fault for 2 goals but still worthy of a 7 or 8. Penalty save was fairly straightforward, but still a bonus. The save at point blank range at 2-1 was superb. Don’t think he could have done anything about the third. First maybe came at him a bit quick. Fourth he was stuck to his line and really should have at least advanced on the player even if he didn’t come and get the cross which he should have.
Lustig 2 - An experienced international defender who did absolutely nothing useful at the back. No organisational skills. Got roasted countless times, not a single positive defensive intervention.
Ambrose 4 - Blessed to get sent off before the rot really set in. Far too casual in possession in the first half. Wandering all over the place. No positional discipline, no communication or partnering with Virgil. All his bad habits so horribly on display.
Virgil 2 - A lazy, arsehole of a performance. Strolled around the pitch. Made a couple of decent blocks in both halves but did them all with a stroll and a dangled leg. Didn’t put himself about. Went wandering wherever he wanted, never got close to marking anyone and played way too far off their strikers. Absolutely not helped by Ambrose, Mulgrew and his full backs but that was abysmal from a supposedly class player.
Mulgrew 0 - Passing was shocking. Touch was rotten. Defending was beyond lazy. It was as bad a defensive display as you’ll ever see from one man. Gave away two penalties through casualness/laziness. Like Virgil he made a couple of blocks, but like Virgil that was mostly because he got turned inside out and managed to find himself in the way again.
Matthews 3 - Just ever so marginally less brutal than the other defenders, partly because he played in midfield for most of the second half and partly because he was involved in creating a good chance for McGregor. Every bit as vulnerable when being run at there, but at least had the good sense not to stick out a lazy leg like Mulgrew did a few times.
Izaguirre 3 - No improvement at all really when he came on. Seemed to settle us a bit initially but once they started running at him he was just like a turnstile waving them past. Appealing for offside on that chipped free kick near the end was a disgusting dereliction of duty.
Johansen 4 - Actually thought he was useful in the first half, good in possession and kept the shape reasonably well. Also had to take sole responsibility for keeping the ball in the middle because Mulgrew was appalling. No cover to his defence really in the second half but he was stranded by the ineptitude of everyone else. Needs to be asserting himself though.
McGregor 6 - Got his goal with a bit of fortune but also thanks to trying something positive. Faded a bit naturally but still involved in anything useful we did in the second half.
Berget 0 - As bad a debut as you’ll ever see. No effort, looked extremely lightweight and looked like an annoying lazy prick who gives away soft frees by conceding lazy fouls instead of tackling someone and risking getting hurt.
Commons 4.5 - Touch was careless too often. Was involved in the goal and also had our next best effort of the match with his run and shot. Stranded in the second half by the fact we couldn’t put 2 passes together.
Kayal 1 - Appalling. He just doesn’t have it anymore. Or anything close to whatever it might be. Sloppy, ragged, reckless and shirking responsibility. No help whatsoever.
Pukki 5 - Helped by being taken off at half time (which was very surprising given Berget’s first half effort). But he did look lively enough and linked the play relatively well. It was nothing special but it wasn’t embarrassing.
Delilah won’t last until Christmas.
