@STVGrant: Many citing example of Debrecen fined for ineligible player. Rule differs. That player wasn’t banned. If a player plays banned = forfeit.
Some major straw clutching going on here.
if the polka cheated they should be fucked out
Rules are rules.
That right back was the difference between the sides, I felt.
It’s gas that the penalty for fielding a banned player is the game being awarded to the opposition on a 3-0 scoreline.
So we’d conveniently go through on away goals.
I did say not to underestimate Legia’s ability to fuck this up.
That language is mandatory, not discretionary. There is no wiggle room there.
Indeed. @Rocko and I were having one of our extremely interesting football chats yesterday lunchtime and he started asking me those annoying “if you were guaranteed it now, would you take it…” type questions.
If you were guaranteed a penalty shoot-out now, would you take it? No, I said. Would you, I responded. Yes, he replied.
If you were guaranteed a penalty shoot-out now and Celtic had taken the first kick and scored, would you take it? No, I said. Would you, I responded. Yes, he replied. This didn’t surprise me based on his first answer.
I told him we’d be well capable of turning the tie around and we wouldn’t need to rely on penalties.
It looks like I’m going to be right. In your face, @Rocko.

poor rocko, clamped again
Embarrassing for the chap yet again.
A reunion with Cillian Sheridan would be absolutely fantastic. I’d travel to Cyprus for the away leg as I have business interests there.
+1
although I think we become seeded, id fancy us to beat any of those teams even legia warsaw
Legia are lucky this isn’t futsal because 5-0 would be a fairly embarrassing scoreline for them.

I’d fear none of those teams at BT Murrayfield.
There’s precedent for this being solved with just a fine:
in 2010, Uefa fined Debrecen £15,000 but rejected a protest from opponents Litex Lovech, who wanted the Hungarian side kicked out of the tournament for fielding an ineligible player.
Debrecen argued that they fielded Peter Mate in good faith as a substitute in Bulgaria when they were leading 4-1 on aggregate.
This looks like a fairly strong precedent:
6-1 on aggregate should be enough for you to realise Celtic aren’t good enough to play in the Champions league proper. The Scottish league is not much better then the league of Ireland. I wish Celtic well but relying on technicality’s after getting a battering just goes to show how far the club has fallen in Europe.
It’s clear cut.
Playing a “suspended” player is a match forfeit and 3-0 win to the opposition.
Playing an “ineligible” player (e.g. registration error) allows for fines and other less severe punishments.
But this is the first instance in practice.
Imagine how the chap who missed the two penalties in the first leg feels.
