Champions League - Round of Four

RĂŠal and are the only side in the last 4 who have had a tough path here. Liverpool have had a very easy run in. They have avoided Barca, Real, Chelsea and Bayern to this point who have shared the last 7 CL titles between them and also avoided Atletico, Dortmund, Man Utd and Juve who are the only other sides to have contested a final in that time period.

It’s why a CL title is so much easier win these days as opposed to a league title, it’s all about the luck of the draw.

Liverpool have got to a SF by the equivalent of winning a Munster Title. Real have had to get there by the equivalent of winning an Ulster title.

Agreed

and the thing is it’s rare enough for anyone with an Ulster title to win the big dance.

Forza Liverpool.

A comfortable xG victory for Bayern tonight as you predicted.

It’s certainly tougher as they don’t get parachuted into the business end.

Excellent analogy.

Its a totally different type of football. Leagues suit teams who dominate the opposition and have excellent technical players all over. Cup competitions suit counter attacking teams who can soak up pressure and have loads of pace in attack

A cauterising middle?

It does but typically the league is the same for everyone.

Cup draws generally aren’t, it’s possible one side may benefit from a very soft draw compared to another.

In all reality Spartak, Sevilla, Maribor, Porto, City, Roma is a much kinder prospect compared to APOEL, Spurs, PSG, Dortmund, Juve and Bayern.

Does any really give a fuck how a team got where they did once they win? I couldn’t give a fuck if Liverpool had the easiest draw in the history of the comp.

That’s what makes them fascinating . Leagues are generally processions and barring a real tight race are boring enough . England , Germany , France and Spain’s leagues were utter processions this year . In general the best ( best resourced team wins the league ) .

Limerick will win the hardest all Ireland in the history of the GAA this year .

Is it really? Madrid and Barca have dominated the CL in the past 15 odd years.

No side left of field has really entered that arena without huge financial resources really, apart from maybe Atletico and Dortmund, both of whom captured a domestic league title in that time. You’re going back to 2004 and Porto under Mourinho for a side who came from nowhere to win a CL.

You only can only beat what’s in front of you.

It’s not Liverpool’s fault that they got some shite Serie A fodder in a champions league semi

Madrid had that luxury last round.

Liverpool fans very testy about the asterisk on their CL run.

Agree the RM and Barcelona have dominated but that is because the have been the 2 best teams in Europe . However the Cups have given other teams a shot at glory in knock outs that domestic league don’t .

Hasn’t really been the case, more competition in the UCL as it draws from a bigger pool and as such will have clubs on closer terms regarding resources and finances to RM and Barca. There has been no real side outside of the richest clubs in Europe which has reached a final in the CL recently. You could argue cases for Dortmund and Atletico but they also both tasted domestic success in that time.

Nobody cares about easy draws, hard draws it’s all the same on final night. The only time an easy draw in any sport was really relevant was the asterix after the Tipperary All Ireland win in 1989 when Tony Keady was suspended for the semi final and they only had to beat Antrim in the final.
