In terms of the evolution of this young team, the game was massive.
Although they didnât win, they dominated Cork in most areas, were hit with sucker blows and still pulled it out of the fire. Previous Clare teams would have collapsed after the second goal.

The trajectories of both teams are diverging.
Cork outscored Clare 1-03 to 0-2 in last ten minutes.
If there was extra time there was only one winner - Cork.
Its a completely different scenario to this time last year but I had a gut feeling when I woke Monday morning after the drawn game that KK would beat us in the replay.
KK knew our hand of cards, we didnât have any Ace Of Hearts to pull from the bunch and the calamity of the weekend leading into the replay just catalyzed this further.
The only way Clare can improve is if they can score goals and tighten the defense around the D. These two improvements are near impossible to implement together as they are both coupled tightly to where the extra man is deployed. However there is one plan that could allow the extra man to play deep and yet could mean a greater chance of getting a goal. A few high balls on-top of Honan. He could be the difference.

Clare also hit the Cork crossbar in the last ten minutes. Cork got a relatively fortuitous, if outstanding goal in that time.
Iâm not sure anybody could be certain about Cork winning in extra time.

In fairness Iâd agree with that about extra time.
Clare have a way better bench, Cork had theirs used during the game. In ET, Clare would have filleted them like they did when they relegated them to Div 2 hurling status

Galway donât have the spread of scoring players that Clare seem to have at the moment. Obviously Canning is some ace to have though.

Iâm not sure Clare need to score goals. 25 points is plenty. Defense is an issue though and one I feel can be rectified. Do Cork need to get goals?
A soft penalty given away with no particular need and two long range goals. Iâm not sure the lack of a sweeper was the problem. These guys have improved all year and several of the backs have played just a handful of games. The defense issues are not insurmountable.
I donât know how the replay will go, but one feeling I donât have is a gut feeling that they will be beaten. Mainly because of their response to each of the goals, the spread of scorers that they have and a hope that the defensive lapses that led to the goals can be worked on.
Yes, Moylan made a terrific contribution from a Clare perspective, sure if heâd followed his man for the final play of the game we wouldnât even be having this conversation

It seems to escape you that you look like a 9 year old who takes your ball away cos all the other lads are better than you.
There was no one better than me mate. I was God-like, I took the ball.

Conlon, Galvin, and McGrath could all have bigger games, as could whoever we put in at full forward, but in general Iâd say youâre right. Both offensively and defensively things went very well. The goals were obviously the black mark and on that front itâs hard to know how itâll go the next day. We may well struggle to stop Cork getting goals again without a sweeper, but at the other end we had three good goal scoring chances and by the law of averages youâd have to think thereâs a decent chance of us getting one at some point in the replay. Who knows though, we would have said that after the game earlier on in the year as well.
I suppose from our point of view the encouraging thing would be that things went much the same as the Limerick game in general play, and weâd have good grounds to believe that weâll perform at least as well again. It wasnât a freak performance by any means. The conclusion that a little bit of improvement from Cork would tip the balance their way is the natural conclusion to come to given that the game ended in a draw, but replays never tend to be that straightforward. Cork are going to have to make it happen in some sector in a way they couldnât manage last Sunday. In all likelihood thatâs going to have to be at midfield or in the half-forward line.
