Cork GAA 2014

Played senior hurling for Newtown.

thats the point i am making. there are players with senior clubs who would be in this squad if it was being picked as a development team.
unfortunately rather than doing that, in cork if senior players were available they would just be trying to win the competition with whatever senior players were available with no thought for age or potential to improve.

Ya, 16.
Rumours that Dan Kearney’s little (or big?) brother William has joined the senior squad. I assume this thing about Mark Collins joining is bollocks or there would be more made of it.

Brian Hartnett also permanently gone from the squad, apparently for going to his brother’s wedding in the States. Same thing happened to a lad from my club and the Cork Intermediates, went on his honeymoon for a fortnight, not brought back on to the panel.
Hartnett still on the extended panel but may not make match day squad.

Mark Collins has been drafted onto the extended panel. That’s an odd one imo.

that is a bizarre call surely.
Where does he play?

Calling up Collins? Cork are rattled to within an inch of their lives. Tipperary by 5.

Midfield/half forward. Hasn’t played a game of hurling since Douglas went out last year which is 11-12 months ago.

Really strange, and unnecessary.

if they wanted to bring in a player like that surely john cronin would be the correct call. i just can`t understand why he is not in that squad

I agree. I haven’t seen much of Cronin, but a hurler who has been hurling would be a much fairer choice.

Cork need to drop the dual thing, as a group they seem obsessed with it and are ignoring very obvious issues.

Half-forward.

He is different from Jon Cronin, more of a threat in the air.

Collins? He’d get eaten alive in the air by most top level half backs.

And yet he is still better in the air than John Cronin is, which was my point.

They did the same last year with Aidan Walsh and possibly Sheehan. Just to give them experience and a taste of it I’d say. Worked out well in walsh’s case anyway.

No they didn’t. That was all horse shit

Unless collins is spectacular in the air altogether i still don`t see the sense of it. Cronin is a really good player hurling well at fitzgibbon and intermediate. he has athleticism pace and is really good at hoovering up ball and doing the right thing with it. considering he comes from a small club you would imagine he needs to be in the squad to improve

They definitely did. I was talking to Walsh about it.

So they were just playing it down in the media?
Sheehan definitely denied it. Have an example of being in a pub or something and being asked how the hurling was going. He had heard nothing or not been approached.

He may have attended a training session but he didn’t train with them last year.

Whatever about him being better than Collins, Cronin is similar to Cooper…except the latter is superior in every facet of his play. Not sure what Cronin would offer to the current squad that we don’t already get from Cooper. Lawton is another similar type hurler on the squad that has played on the same teams/at the same level as Cronin.

In saying that, I’m surprised Cronin and Drake haven’t been tried, since we’ve tried pretty much everyone else at this stage, including a number of lads that are inferior to both.
