Yeah v poor contribution from both really. Mallow 2 snr hurlers in my living memory and loughrey only footballer?
Couldnât recall any from Fermoy off top of head. Luke Mannix ever play snr?

Are ye going to beat tip lads
Itâs beyond belief that the town where St Colmanâs college is have never had a hurler on the Cork team in my lifetime, Mannix may have played a bit of Waterford Crystal or the likes but never made a championship panel Iâd say, did Ronan Sheehan from Mallow ever play for Cork?
I remember Kieran Morrisson from UCC, he was a decent stickman but he was about 19 stone in his prime, not the kind of guy whoâd play into his 40s, I think heâs a successful guy though whatever it is he does.
@Joe_Player Cork never feared Tipp
Traditionally Colmanâs hurlers would have been the roasters who were either boarders from the diocese of Cloyne or day-boys from the surrounding hinterland, Castlelyons, Conna etc.
Fermoy was always very âtownieâ with little interest and indeed antipathy to the gga.
They had a few very good hurlers at my age group but none ever amounted to anything,
They never had good soccer teams either and have no tradition to speak of in any sport, is it a town that has antipathy to all sports?
Yeah v poor. Bandon and Charleville two other fair sized towns with poor history of inter county reps
Darren OâDonoghue from Bandon played a few years with Cork in the mid 90s (possibly worst ever Cork teams)
Charleville is a strange one though, hurling seems to be popular in the town and with Ballyhea and Newtown within walking distance youâd expect more.
Hurling is popular in Charleville alright. Decent underage and won intermediate county last year I think
Brian OâSullivan played in some pre-season tournies for Cork seniors, if that counts.
No Joe.
Bandon is a sporting town though, its a true Garrison town and Rugby, Soccer and Hockey all do well.
Its hinterland is the strongest in Cork. Surrounded by some of the strongest pound for pound rural clubs in the country.
Fermoy have Tom Clancy who has played Munster finals and in Croke Park in the football. They are making good strides over past 15 years and continue to improve at underage. Premier Intermediate in both now, and probably a threat in both too.
Charleville is much smaller but again seems to be becoming consistent at all levels. Even though it was only last year coming up from Intermediate they are also contenders at Premier. Really nice stickman hurling team and are not that flaky anymore either.
Mallow are a joke. Just a disgrace. How they are not Senio in both is beyond me. There are towns in Ireland smaller than Mallow or only just bigger with 4 or 5 clubs. There is just no love for the club from what i have seen over the years. Talent is never an issue.
Fermoy was a garrison town and in common with other garrison towns would have little tradition of GAA. A hundred years on youâd think that these things wouldnât matter, but they do and tradition dies hard.
Mea culpa completely forgot about Clancy.
Mallow were snr football few years back I think were they?
Again, donât dispute your point at all about Bandons hinterland but still the point remains for a big town poor inter county reps. Would almost think the strength of local rural clubs should be a boost for Bandon with increase local competitiveness etc
Possibly the case that whilst all focus is on lack of contribution from city clubs that there are plenty other culprits around?
most successful recent Cork sides backboned by players from rural clubs really
Ya agree. The straegies have been a bit strange for a ling time. They should be throwing money at population. Every town should have very good facilities that are regionally available. Like if Macroom was well equiped then Aginagh, Cill Na Matra, Ballingeary, Clondrohid, Canovee, Kilmurray would all benefit. The town club should be supported to fund big ground development, say 5-6 pitches and gym etc.
Thats the way forward but the CB is still far too old and political.
The move to force big populations regrade to Intermediate has worked out well already. Clinakiltys Junior B team were moved up 2 grades and they have handled it. Carrigaline were delighted to move up, they saw it as raising standards and thats the approach you need. You need to be forcing these clubs hands or else create new clubs and take the population from them.
Blackrock should have Senior, Prem Int., Intermediate and Junior A sides. Arguably Douglas as well.
It takes time though, and in fairness Fermoy started this around 2000. They got down to brass tacks then with coaching etc. Shows how long it takes. But many clubs are not willing to play the long game.
When are we likely to get the team? Thursday night at 7 for both senior/intermediate?
friday night i think
The Cork Intermediate team to play Tipperary next Sunday in the Munster Intermediate Hurling Championship has been announced as follows
Declan Dalton (Fr Oâ Neills)
Diarmuid Lester (Bishopstown)
Colm Barry (Castlelyons)
Darren Browne (Kanturk)
Kevin Kavanagh (Carrigaline)
Donnacha Oâ Donovan (Ballinhassig) Vice Capt
Cian Buckley (Na Piarsaigh)
Brian Murray (Bishopstown) Capt
Kevin Oâ Neill (Watergrasshill)
Dean Brosnan (Glen Rovers)
Nicky Kelly (Mayfield)
Eoin Oâ Sullivian (Sarsfields)
David Drake (Carrigaline)
Patrick Oâ Rourke (Na Piarsaigh)
Noel McNamara (Kilworth)
Tommy Wallace (Midleton)
Greg Murphy (Newcestown)
Ciaran Oâ Brien (St Itas)
Shane Hegarty (Dungourney)
Rickard Cahalane (Ballymartle)
Andrew Cagney (Charleville)
Eamonn Brosnan (Meelin)
Sean Hayes (Mallow)
Barry Lawton (Castlemartyr)
Decent backs/midfield, poor enough forwards. Arenât OâSullivan and Kelly very small for that half-forward line? Brosnan an erratic ballwinner. OâRourke has the best hand of the lot, youâd expect them to be direct with him at 14. Dalton, Barry, Buckley and OâNeill are the talents.
If Tipp have a decent team itâll be a tight match.
Cork to ambush Trip. No evidence Tipp have found a new midfield, Cork are decent enough there to break even or better. With Callanan not back to full speed the Tipp forwards are toothless enough. Lehane to run riot, Cork by 2.
