That’s an extremely ignorant take on it and nothing near the truth.
Kerry had several outstanding players and generally an excellently balanced squad. McCarthy fitted in to a class outfit and was given the freedom to play his game with protection from he likes of Galvin and Kenneally. He also had some individual training sessions every week to get him up to speed. The legend is nothing like the reality. This Kerry team had great belief, a good management and loads of talent.
Cork are nothing at all like that. Not next or near it. Bizarre comparision.
ok lets leave hurling out of it for a while - that’s fair enough
he started back inter county in mid June after 2 years out and was outstanding. These are facts. Also Mike McCarthy was always well able to mind his own patch and didn’t need too much protection. Kenneally had enough to do that year finding his own form. The Kerry team was also motoring poorly that summer which is why they hunted Mike down to come back. all the gym monkeys training flat out for 2 years and a player breezes in and outclasses them after a few laps of the stadium
Feck mac
I meant to reply to kev’s post about kev piling on the blaas owing to Brian Murphy coming back and on about him missing training. I think the comparison with Mike McCarthy in football is well made. How did he manage such a successful mid summer comeback after 2 years destroying lads that had been training flat out for 2 years while Mike was retired! Brian Murphy might well perform very well in hurling.
I have no comment to make re COS other than he is a very good player and Cork could do with him.
That’s an embellishment of the truth. McCarthy got involved in some vital plays as he was given the freedom to do so. However it’s not like he was player of the year.
Brian Murphy is coming into a side where
- some management are not talking to each other
- several players lack a serious fitness. Even the ones that will be back have missed weeks and weeks of training.
- the players, particularly a few leaders, have lost faith in management and their ability to compete with other more tactically astute managers.
- in Kerry players love to come back, be involved, right now in Cork you have 2 of the most unenthusiastic senior teams in years, hurling and football.
I’m piling on Waterford (putting 1k on tomorrow after getting some more, more sensitive information) because they have better more organised and hungrier players with an excellent management. I will also be putting a few quid on a nice Waterford spread. Corks lack of fitness will be exposed. They are only back training tonight. How could they have a plan for Waterford working well by the championship?
Worst thing ever that happened Cork was getting back to beat Dublin. Ruined them.

That’s not what happened.
- He kept himself well always - Brian Murphy is not like that.
- He was training to be with Kerry a good whole before it actually happened
- He did an extra day a week when he came back.
- He had talent and it’s not like he was 34/35. He was probably after retiring too early.
- He was not coming back to be a man marking problem filling star. He came back to be a player to transition ball and organise as Kerry identified this as an issue. Cork are hoping BM can plug 2-3 holes.
yeah kev but your original point seemed to focus a lot on the training Brian Murphy had missed. I just pointed out an IC example of where a player made light of missing all that gym work and pre season that is now made out to be so essential
as for cork management not talking to each other sure we heard that in 2013 and they were all Ireland champions if brian gavin blew up when he should!
Sure plenty say players and management in the Kerry team Mike Mc came into weren’t on good terms either!
Cork to win and Brian Murphy to be man of the match is surely now nap of the year. Fill your boots gentlemen.
I’d fancy to put in our one big performance on the 7th. Cork by 2.
Cork’s minor chances look fairly bleak now
Shane Kingston broke his leg last night

Cork are fucked so

Fuck, how?
playing against Clare - didn’t look like anything so maybe it isn’t a bad break but he was such a key player
They talk about player welfare yet make players play less than 2 weeks from their leaving cert in a meaningless challenge game, some joke.
Ya, huge loss. Some breaks can be quick enough, so hopefully not too bad.
He is pretty certain of being a senior straight out of minor all going well.
yes indeed. its not for everyone. Thats exactly what i said. he has chosen not to give that level of commitment and thats his right but lads crapping on about him being better than current cork seniors on the basis of playing well in club hurling is pure rubbish.
If you feel he has some terrible issue in his life that is preventing him hopping in a car with jamie coughlan or the duhallow players and spinning down to cork a few times a week thats fine.
I suspect he couldnt be arsed myself.
whether or not cork are any good has bugger all to do with it.
Three Cork Minors were playing in a senior league game between Sars and the Rockies last weekend. Some pisstake.
ah here. I imagine he keeps himself fit and doesn’t drink a bucket of beer every weekend. He is only gone for a season.
Mike McCarthy Kerry footballer made some mockery of these fitness you must trains 3 times a day 7 days a week merchants a few years back. He missed 2 or 3 seasons of inter county. Was playing club and dabbling in a bit of shitty Kerry District League soccer for 2 or 3 years for a bit of craic. He came back to Kerry mid June and was the best centre back in the country as Kerry went on to win the all Ireland. after running a lap of Fitzgerald Stadium he was as fit as the rest of the country
how do you reckon kerry would have done if the entire squad strolled in in june?

are the cusacks coming back as well?
he was trying to turn iside the wing back. he seemed to slip and they collided and he went to ground.
utterly harmless collision.
he was carried off but was up on his feet soon after and told a friend of mine * that he was fine when asked.
cork management seemed unconcerned walking off after the match which he watched from the sideline himself without seeming to be in any discomfort.
What was the Cork team TAN.
didn’t they used to do that to peak for September
anyway some lads are naturally athletic - Jack O’Shea was a machine long before gyms or structured training programmes
I would worry about some lads but Murphy will be fine - he played an All Ireland Final a few weeks after breaking his collar bone - I heard the story of what he did to do that - bordering on insanity. Cork could do with a few more like him.
