What was his take on things?

Basically the 5k rule is completely counter productive.
He said lockdown fatigue is a real thing and he compared the current restrictions to the old campaign of telling people to abstain from sex to prevent aids. It works for a little while and then people just ignore it and it makes things worse.
Need to tell people what they can do safely, not just stop them from living

I must say Luke has been the only voice throughout this who has been in anyway realistic with his ideas. Heā€™s gasping for a pint id say

Heā€™s an absolute genius and an absolutely sound and gas man at the same time. Heā€™s a national treasure.

Luke for President. I get the feeling Pat Kenny isnā€™t happy with him at all anymore, but is stuck with him now having made an icon of him when he agreed with him

First of all I would say that no Government has made a good job of this pandemic because no one was prepared for it. Deaths per million here are 1331 compared to 930 in Ireland. Very close to Swedenā€™s number actually but not as bad as UK, France, Italy, Spain.
Looking in, I would say that the Irish Governmentā€™s approach has been genuinely to avoid loss of life. In Poland the Government havenā€™t seemed to be as bothered. Last year they were more worried about getting Duda elected for a second term, sacking judges and limiting abortion rights. But they also wanted to keep the economy alive, as a result GDP only dropped by 2-4%.
So what have they done that was different to Ireland?

  1. Similar lockdown in March/April last year. Borders closed. (Road borders here too of course). Looking back, there was no wave last spring.
  2. Schools sent home last year and the infrastructure wasnā€™t there to do online learning. (better now though)
  3. State exams went ahead last year with about a monthā€™s delay.
  4. A fairly comprehensive re-opening from May to October.
  5. They told the schools they were re-opening from September and basically told the schools and the teacher unions to get on with it. Schools remained open for seven weeks to mid October and since then all kids have been on virtual learning. (plus Universities).
  6. Kindergartens have remained open throughout.
  7. A semi lockdown from Mid October to early December, most shops and services opened.
  8. Semi lockdown resumed in January and kids winter holidays moved. The ski runs were shut, that was a big thing.
  9. Primary kids back in school from Mid Jan until now, the older kids still online.
  10. Pretty much full opening except bars, restaurants and schools since February but with the numbers increasing going back into a bigger lockdown this weekend.
  11. As I said before, it looks to me like the only people WFH are those working for MNCs. Most transmissions are in the workplace.
  12. Vaccination roll out seems to be going well but the issue is supply like across the EU.
  13. The health service is reasonably ok but not perfect. No issues with ICU getting overloaded until now.

Does Luke be on newstalk regularly? I donā€™t hear him on rte. Claire Byrne constantly goes back to McDonkey.

Iā€™d agree with this. I do think it is the overriding concern, which is good enough until it gets to the point where it excludes all else and leads to absolutism and misguided decision making.

Heā€™s on PK twice a week Thursdays and some other day

Oā€™Neill is an utter tramp. You lads should know better. His recent change in tone might have more to do with being roughed up a little.
