I have heard that story being mentioned alright.

Cases are flying up worldwide but deaths are staying constant relatively.

The virus is morphing into being even more contagious but less deadly, the ideal situation for it surviving.

Not necessarily.
My take on it is that the testing and contact tracing processes are now more mature and more likely to catch cases. Meanwhile there is a greater understanding of the virus and the types of people who need to be protected, so less vulnerable people are catching it and dying.

It’s both. The track and trace isolates the most powerful strains of the virus so the virus in order to survive has to be less potent.
