Neutralizing antibodies produced via infection or vaccination are the key to preventing both serious disease or reinfection, those that are immunocompromised don’t produce much. The study only ran through April 2021 and breakthrough infections have been increasing since then, it will be interesting to see more studies as time goes on to determine if immunity is lasting.
Not a lot of discussion about it but Chile seems to have turned a corner with Covid, with the the rest of South America seeing surging cases. Forget about the geopolitics stuff, it’s good news if the Chinese vaccines have a decent degree of efficacy.
They do eventually, takes them nine weeks, still not as good as the western ones but the problem has been that people don’t wait the two months to feel protected, naturally enough.
I had a look at the number of daily vaccines administered worldwide and see we peaked at the end of June (43m). Seems to be an upturn again though which makes sense as Europe and the U.K. winded down in July but the third world and other western countries saw increased supply.
With 30-35m done per day, you could have another 5bn administered by the end of the year. Looking at the percentages, it’s hard to see how every country who wants doses won’t have decent coverage by then, assuming they are each given access to doses. The number of boosters the West hordes along with child vaccines could impact that.
If the Chinese vaccines hold up, we will be in a good place by year end globally. 28% of the globe have a shot by now, it could be 60% by year end. Can’t see how we get much over that globally but along with natural immunity we should see the virus retreat a good bit.
That’s the most positive outlook I’ve heard in a while.
