The key to all of this fasting lark is reducing production of insulin. Insulin drives the storage of fat and conversely without insulin you cannot produce fat (type 1 diabetics waste away until they start taking insulin, but then can gain excess weight if they take too much insulin). What most don’t understand is that small portions or even tasting food stimulates insulin production, so for intermittant fasting to work, you have to have a clean fast i.e. water and unflavored drinks like tea or coffee.

Unless you are very active, two meals a day, spaced 8 hours apart, and a clean fast for the remaining 16 hours is ideal. No need for fancy diets that don’t work.

The modern western diet has people eating 5 times a day. With huge amounts of salt and sugar.

Agriculture was the worst thing that ever happened humans, we’d be far healhier if we still had to forage for food.

Does it actually work though?

To lose weight or broader health benefits? Yes to the lose weight question as with low levels of insulin your body burns fat for ketones which replace glucose for energy. Reduction or elimination of diseases is less evidenced but obviously a lot of disease is linked to obesity, heart disease, diabetes, etc. Claims that reduction in diseases like dementia are more controversial.

That is total bollocks anyway.

I’m no farmer but I admire the cunts in how they contunue to feed the country. There is a lot worse things than agriculture that has happened to humanity over the years anyway.

Bang on …The reduction of inflammation in the body is a big benefit

He has a point though. Before, we had to hunt wild animals, often different animals different weeks so you’d have different types of meat and animal fat. We had to forage for fruit, berries, veg, nuts and the like. A lovely variety to the diet, eating when needed and not out of habit.

Farming allowed for plain, nutrient stripped foods like wheat, barley, seed oils, and other crops to be grown everywhere. Obviously it allowed the idiots to not starve of hunger which drove population numbers but in terms of a healthy diet and an optimal diet, it cannot be good. There’s also the farmed vs wild animal debate. Our ancestors ate better quality food for sure. Pity for them a broken leg or a bad cut was akin to stepping on a landmine, but their gut health and physiques must have been fantastic.

Fair point.

Read about what happens your body when you fast for long periods. Yoshinori Ohsumi won a nobel prize for his work on this - autophagy

In fairness, anyone ateing coco pops etc to bate the band for breakfast is better off dead.

A good fast is the job.

The carnivore diet seems like the way to go too. I’m considering taking it up for the craic.

I’ve been banging the earthing drum for years and I’ll stay banging it. Some tradesmen in Norway work the first hour of every day barefoot, regardless of weather and snow. And with that they can work for decades. Stuck in boots there bodies cramp and get too sore by their forties.

When was the last time your feet touched the earth? Posters should ask themselves that on the weekly
