The wife checked us in for the return flight last night but we couldn’t check the baggage in to bring on board even though we were grand and early checking in. I wonder was that the start of it?

No. We managed to check the baggage in at the airport. We just made sure that we didn’t leave anything valuable in the cases. Worst case scenario if the bags got lost all we were missing were bikinis, boxers and a few pairs of shorts. Got in to Dublin Dublin around 1.30am and our bags were nearly the first off the plane. But the flight was nowhere near full and a lot of people we met at check in had experienced the same as ourselves while trying to check luggage in.
