Yeah there’s a good distance to it. Not naive enough to think it doesn’t reflect Loach’s views but he resists the temptation to preach or use experts like you say. It’s easy to talk down trade unions these days (and some are self-serving and some turn a blind eye to injustices that don’t suit them) but there were some excellent people in that movement at local level anyway.
I see where my brother has picked up Man on Wire on DVD. I’ll give that a look soon.
good stuff- you’ll enjoy it mate
Indeed. An excellent watch.
Watched parts 1 and 2 of this documentary on the nations hero’s. Nothing we haven’t heard before but well put together and some great interviews with some of the foremast senior ranks of the early days, a post-stroke one to one with Sean McStiofan in particular stands out.
ESPN are currently showing their 30 30 for 30 series. Haven’t got many yet, but the two I did get was
No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson
Details the 1993 trial of Hampton, Virginia, high-school athlete Allen Iverson, convicted for his role in a racially-tinged melee, and its impact on both the community and on Iverson’s life.
Very interesting piece which looks into the racial tension in the area at the time and how it lead to the riot in the bowling alley, and especially Iversen’s role in it.
Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. The New York Knicks
Great bit about Reggie Miller and his hate hate relationship with the NY Knicks back in the 90’s. Some great games back then between the Pacers and Knicks, this duc focuses in on the 1995 NBA Playoffs and Miller’s interaction with Knicks fan Spike Lee.
Both well worth watching. These 30 for 30 doc’s look like great entertainment.
Film about Anders Escobar and Pablo Escobar on ESPN tonight at 9.30. Supposed to be an excellent film. Part of that 30 for 30 series MBB is talking about above.
Also available on torrent sites at the moment.
Great shout mbb. Both of them were very good.
That was interesting. The parts about Pablo were better than the parts about Andres.
I think it’s on again tonight. Excellent film. Think I’ll be downloading a lot of these.
20.30 tomorrow on ESPN as far as I remember.
“The Band that Wouldn’t Die” and “Small Potatoes: Who Killed the USFL?” are my favourites of the series. I saw a small bit of “Run Ricky Run”, that’ll be one I’ll be downloading soon.
Watched a great one on ‘the Whale that ate Jaws’ recently on National Geo…
Epic viewing for all wildlife fans…
Covers the story of Orca whales and how one pod have cleverly learned to flip a Great white shark upside down and hold it in its mouth in this position
which renders the shark unconcious and thus suffocates it… it then clevely bites it so as the liver pops out and devours the liver.
The great white is no longer top dog in the sea it seems…
Had one Sky plussed from a few weeks back and only watched it this week. “The Cove” is an Oscar winning documentary that deals with the slaughter of dolphins in a Japanese village (Taiji, I think). The locals are fairly secretive about it, not wanting footage of the sea turning red being broadcast to the outside world, so the OPS guys used some cunning methods to get their pictures.
Aside from the horrible death these dolphins meet, the documentary explained that dolphin meat has about 20,000 times more mercury in it than is safe to consume, and as a result its been taken off the menu in Japanese schools. The leader of the group was the guy who trained Flipper in the 1960s TV show. Only when the star committed suicide in his arms, did he change from being a trainer of dolphins to a releaser of those in captivitity.
I downloaded a shitload of these, but they wouldn’t play on my mediaplayer whatever format they came through in, seemed to be avi files. Might go back and look for them again, if anyone has any links to them I’d appreciate it.
I’ve heard some bits recently about HBO sport documentaries, Flano you might know a bit more about it. They go to some NFL teams pre season who they think will do well in the coming season, I’ve heard there’s been some outstanding ones in the past. I’m going to dig out what I can myself, but any pointers would be appreciated.
VLC player will play them
Yea, thats fine if I want to watch them via my laptop, but I have a standalone hard drive mediadisk that I just transfer everything onto and watch from there. Is there a covertor I could download perhaps?
Yeah download Winavi. Get it on a torrent site. Quick converter.
We were discussing that HBO stuff on the NFL thread - well not really discussing, more bemoaining the absence of torrents for this year’s version.
Has anyone seen this new documentary on C4 called ‘Slumming It’. Kevin McCloud of ‘Grand Designs’ fame is presenting it and basically he goes into the slums in India to live for a while. I’ve just started watching the first episode on Youtube. It certainly looks promising so far.
