Fuck it. Great idea.
I still want the M20. But letās do this too

Has to happen. No need to drive into the city for any reason.
It appears we are very expensive already mate. Very little of this has been invested in generating a better public transport system, but is used to keep unions happy and fund glitzy announcements and public consultations for the same projects (repackaged) every couple of years.
According to the Eurostat data, when it comes to transport by rail and bus, Ireland is fifth overall, far ahead of the EU average
Some of the cagers circle k-ing the wagons already mate.
Give us the Adare bypass and a better local hospital and weāll call it quits.
We will get all the roads we want before the hospital improves
Agreed
A couple of weeks ago they issued one of their regular ādo not present yourself at A & E unless you require emergency medical careā pleas, due to overcrowding.
When people got to the check in desk they were being told they faced a sixteen (16) hour wait to be seen. Like something out of a third world country.
Another one issued yesterday
That plan is remarkable, itās equal parts wildly ambitious and yet somehow equally totally inadequate. For me itās fatally flawed.
Ambitious in that they are talking about essentially adding 6 commuter services where currently there are none. These would be train services rather than light rail presumably as at least three of the legs are being built on existing train lines. I canāt see where the capacity is coming for these trains tbh.
Some of itās not a bad idea. Adding a stop at Ballysimon for example to get on or off the regular trains to Limerick Junction etc. that makes sense, thereās already a train, just increase itās users.
The Ennis line already exists, no one uses it because itās slow as fuck. Bit of investment in that to make it actually work would be worthwhile I guess, as it would help fix the Western Rail Corridor also.
Thereās already trains through Annacotty as well, but the line is unusable for commuting as itās so irregular, so again fixing that issue and making it useful would be good. Making the full line useful again would shorten the journey to Dublin too and Nenagh etc would be linked properly to both Dublin and Limerick
The Shannon line is needed in theory, but it would be basically unused until Shannon getās the flights back, bit of a chicken and egg one.
But really this is about getting around the city for us urbanites, but itās basically useless for that. The city needs one light rail line between, Mungret and Annacotty. Thatās it, down through Raheen, Dooradoyle, through town, up to the train station, out by parkway, UL, Castletroy, Annacotty.
Extend it on to Adare and Newport etc in time if you want. This would be used, and it would be used a lot.
Once that was up and running and a success, you could look at putting one the other way across the city, Caherdavin etc into town, but for the moment that would be overkill.
However their plan is running the routes over existing train tracks and literally the only reason they are doing those routes is that the lines are already there. If you were to sit down and draw a map, you would not have chosen most of those stops. Theyāve two routes out Raheen side, simply because the two rail lines are in the wrong place. Neither route actually travels through the population centres in Raheen and Dooradoyle or by the hospital. Youād nearly be in town by the time you walked to the stop from some places, the āDooradoyleā stop would have to be by the motorway roundabout or Rosbrien based on the rail line.
Then thereās no stop near UL/Castletroy the one place in the city that actually needs one, because the line to Annacotty takes a weird detour around the city so it doesnāt run that way making it completely useless for that side of the city.
I could rant some more on the laziness of it, but since none of it will ever get done it seems pretty futile. A serious box ticking excercise
TLDR; Basically they are going for the cheap option, but the cheap option is completely the wrong option and will end up costing us a fortune because it wonāt have any users.
Less moneys will be spent on roads so this can be done.
The days of spending 250million on a dual carriageway in westport are hopefully over
Bullets?
Fixing the wrong problem.
Itās not the cost. Iām saying they need to spend more and do it right.
This is just a lazy plan.
Iām not familiar with Limerick, but I find the fact you think your back of the envelope analysis of what is proposed is more incisive than the professionals and experts who have been working on this for the last year very arrogant
Yes mate
Itās not arrogance if you are better than everyone else
Nah kid!
What stop would you alight at for the TUS Gaelic Grounds?
