Favourite Dublin Pub that won't exist again

Fairly similar. A handful of lads in their early 20s in which I wouldn’t have associated with it before

Roy will have in his shortlist soon

Was in the Flowing Tide there tonight after being in the Abbey. 45 minutes to kill before the bus. I’d have a positive vibe about it. Mature crowd. Grand pint and a chaser (x2). One of the staff knocked a full pint over on me (but not over me) and there was no fuss and they landed a fresh pint up for me. No telly which is great. The last time I was in there (1986) they definitely had a telly. Myself and Mango were at Self Aid and we were parched for a drink and we got a bus into town and watched U2 on the telly there.

And you are applauding them for that?

Did you hear applause?

They’ve had a telly in there a LOT more recently than that.

There was one there in 2002 after the All-Ireland football final too.

A lost gem is the Foggy Dew on the edge of Temple Bar. Before it got bought and homogenized, the Foggy Dew was a lovely locals pub smack bang in the middle of Dublin. Back then, the late 1980s, it also had an outstanding pint of Guinness.

It’s still a decent pub. Good music and a good pint. Biker vibe to it.

Used to be a haven for punks in the City Centre.

Really? I first went there while waiting to go to The Underground for a gig. Nights I was there, the Foggy Dew seemed like a pub from some country town transplanted into Central Dublin.

Is it? Never went back in after place changed.

Meh, it’s gone very Temple-Bar-y for my liking.

A couple of other pubs with which I am not familiar but should be, according to friends: Hole in the Wall (Glasnevin) and The Old Royal Oak (Kilmainham).

Hole in the Wall is on Blackhorse Avenue, no?

The Old Royal Oak has been hipsterised, for want of a better word

Used to be great spot. Dela a Johnstown woman was a great sort. There was a great head barman there also of Kilcommon stock. The daughters took over and got rid of Pat and made it a hipster joint.

Yes. A friend who lives in Glasnevin rates HITW highly.
