Well no, because it wasn’t. Ronaldo’s free kick was fucking outstanding mind you
The penalty was a mini version of the free kick.
Vladimir Jugovic’s penalty to win the 1996 European Cup final is as good a pressure penalty as I’ve seen. Van der Sar made a really good effort to save it, but there was no way of stopping the power and perfect direction of the shot.
Actually, Kevin Pressman might be up there too.
Best penalty ever. Only the true greats can do this.
He was very poor against a quite limited side. You don’t get it, he’s meant to be the greatest player in the world, he’s meant to one of the greatest of all time. That just like every other performance from him for Argentina at a major international tournament falls well below the measure of the player he is supposed to be.
You expect a player of his reputation to drag his team through things, he lost possession a criminal amount of times today, he had 12 attempts at goal and the only one that he forced the keeper to make a big save from him was a penalty.
Stop judging Messi under the standards you’d expect of an ordinary player, he is meant to be the best in the world but on the big international stage he flops consistently. That was an indicative performance of him at this level for me, underwhelming. You’re saying he was the best player on the pitch? Risible.
He scored a hattrick last night against one of the top footballing nations in the world.
Mythi, in contrast, bottled it against the least populated nation in the tournament.
So we’re agreed Messi is the best player in the world and has been for the last decade. Cheers, mate.
Does the group stage matter or does it not matter?
Croatia haven’t appeared in the last 16 of a World Cup since 1998.
I think that means Luka Modric is shit, or something.
Modric hasn’t had a great season apparently
Because he had an average CL final
We’re not.
He has shown once again he is way, way off the level of the greats.
Ronaldo showed last night that he is the greatest player of his generation.
International football matters and Messi consistently shits himself when it matters.
Nobody will argue about what he has achieved at Barca but the World Cup is the biggest stage of it all and his performances in World Cups fall way, way, way below the level you’d expect of a world class player, not even considering Messi is meant to he best in the world and one of the greatest of all time. This is his 4th WC, little seems to have changed.
Im sure someone would
Did he shit himself when he scored a hat trick to get them to the world cup?
He also scored 4 goals in the last World Cup
I find it strange how Andres Iniesta is never mentioned in the conversation for GOAT.
As well as being able to beat a man and control games, he’s won four European Cups, nine La Liga titles (with two of those being treblewinning years) a World Cup, and two European Championships, and been one of the two or three most key players in every single one of those titles.
He’s scored the winning goal in the World Cup final with four minutes left in extra-time, and one of the most clutch goals ever, in injury time in the 2009 European Cup semi-final.
As an all rounder, he’s incomparable. He’s unquestionably one of the ten greatest footballers ever.
I’m talking about major international tournaments. He has shit himself in just about everyone he has played for Argentina. You don’t seem to be getting this, Messi is meant to be the best player in the world, one of the greatest of all times - those sort of performances are meant to be the norm and not the exception, his performances at major international tournaments for Argentina have been nothing short of pathetic.
Croatia play a lovely brand of football. Looking forward to watching them.
He scored 4 goals in the last World Cup
