Like a shooting spraoi
Heading up Friday and bringing the fiddles. Looking forward to it.
Brilliant, if your kids play, keep them at it as long as you can. I played the fiddle, whistle and flute for years, went to many Fleadhs but drifted away from it during college. I was convinced to bring the whistle and flute when I went traveling and it was a great thing to be able to do. I still play a bit now again and my Dad goes to the Fleadh every year.
Sorry pal my only itinerary is this week
I found one.
The 2 Fleadhs in Enniscorthy back in '99 and '00 would register as 2 of the best weekends of my life. Just pure honest craic with music and booze thrown in. If you couldn’t enjoy yourself at something like that there’s something wrong with you
It’s coming to Wexford town next year.
So I heard. Drinking cans in a campsite as the sun rose was a lovely existence when I was still in my late teens. I’m not sure it would hold the same attraction when I’m the wrong side of 40
The Bothy Band 1975 is a great album
As I’ve said before Wexford will be a phenomenal venue for the Fleadh Cheoil. Wexford Bus have a 3:30am service to Dublin arriving at 5:55 or so.
I can scarcely imagine a better day in the life of a 24 year old than a trip down on the train to the town of the narrow streets, a leisurely evening and night’s drinking while politely yehooing at the music, honreale craic, a late night chipper @The Premier or Sharkey’s and then a total nightmare of a bus trip home.
Unfortunately I’ve just turned 44.
One of my favourite things about Christmas was my late uncle who was home from Kent watching intensely the TV review of that year’s Fleadh. He was some man for the traditional music. I never really have been but at the same time I fucking love it.
I wish all visitors to this year’s Fleadh a wonderful time.
Those 2 Fleadhs in Enniscorthy were iconic. A few of us volunteered during them. We had to bring the results from the various venues back to the central results place. As this was 1999 and 2000 no-one trusted anything other than paper results. I remember bringing results from the far side of the Shannon back to the presentation school and drinking 3-4 pints in various pubs on the way back. The ‘staff’ wristband meant you could bypass the queue in any pub.
On the Sunday we were politely told that hurrying up a bit wouldn’t be a bad thing as many parents were getting fed up waiting for the official results for their little darlings. I’m fairly sure that made us slow down further. I’ve a vague memory of watching Celtic beat Rangers 5-1 with Henrik Larsson running riot with about 6 brown envelopes in front of me with various results to be delivered while I’m sinking my 4th or 5th pint by 2pm on the Sunday. Glorious times!
The fleadh would be great if the music wasn’t so terrible
Magic way to spend a day.
Plenty of decent music on fare. It’s not just the diddly dee famine music at all you might be thinking it is. Unreal music including 12 PC band and choir.
Highly recommend for anyone,.young and old.
Great crowd in again today last night was off the chain busy
Ah look, I’m sure that it’s great, but I fucking despise the diddley eye stuff and I’ve been to enough to realise that that’s the most of it,
I love folk music, different strokes,
The organisers promised that this year’s fleadh would be the biggest and best ever and they are on course to achieve their target with visitor numbers set to smash the 600,000 mark for the first time in the event’s history.
Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner this afternoon, Fleadh Executive Committee (FEC) vice-chair Willie Penrose said that a record number of visitor have attended the first three days of this year’s fleadh.
“We indicated a couple of weeks ago that it would be close to 600,000. Three days in we now feel that it will exceed the 600,000 mark, which means around €60m will be generated for the local economy.

“The attendances are up between 55 to 60 per cent on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. It’s phenomenal. We have some link to God because the weather is fantastic. We have a lot of priests and Alastair Graham praying for us, and the Bishop prayed for us last Sunday. We are thankful that God is reacting positively to our pleas!
“The weather is a big help. It’s critical in the early part of the week, not so much on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We’d still like good weather but it’s certainly not as critical for us.”
The record crowds have also led to many local businesses reporting that trade is well up on last year.
“It’s being reported that economic activity is up between 45 and 50 per cent. We are delighted. A lot of people supported us and they are paying the dividends and reaping the benefits now.
Crowds are way up compared to last year and weather was good last year also, will be off the chain by the weekend. As I’ve mentioned here before the missus is an FC for a hospitality group and turnover in the pubs in town so far is up in line with the article above.
