Further Things That Are Wrong (Part 1)

It wonā€™t.

The same as watching/ playing video games, horror films, porn, social media, are not the root of evil/being a nut job.

I agree with you.

I think a lot of people are struggling to understand this case. A young woman with her life ahead of her killed randomly. Some symbol of solidarity is all they feel they can add. I didnā€™t go to any vigils (Dundalk organised three separate ones, which they amalgamated eventually into two :man_shrugging:) but I can understand why others did.

We do it here too lads. When a forumite gets bad news (a parent passing or a bad diagnosis), we give them a ā€˜likeā€™ because we feel useless because thereā€™s nothing we can do

When somebody dies in a road accident we should refrain from driving for a day as a mark of respect.

It will. This will encourage the loons when they see the reaction.

Hardly any harm in a minuteā€™s silence

Agreed. Donā€™t particularly want my children knowing what happened but they donā€™t need to obviously. Itā€™s a touch odd that the reaction on here has swung so far that any sort of sympathy seems to invite criticism and even anger.

What an unbelievably ridiculous comparison,
One minute silence that you can observe if you choose to, Jesus,

Going to be tricky for primary school teachers to explain it to their pupils

I believe itā€™s wrong as I donā€™t believe primary school students should be subject to it. There is 0 reason to bring them into it. Secondary school teenagers understand the horrific nature of what happened, theyā€™re informed. What is the point of subjecting a 5 year old to it? 0! And it shouldnā€™t be brought on any primary school teacher either. But yet again the unions get it wrong.

Totally agree with this

It doesnā€™t need to be explained at all.

Iā€™ll take the knee at 11am tomorrow and then publicly apologize for being a man on twitter, that will make me feel better

Absolutely fair point, but is it actually possible to protect children from knowing, or finding out, what happened?

There was a woman on Liveline earlier today who was keeping her 8 year-old daughter out of school tomorrow if this momentā€™s silence went ahead whilst her 12 year-old son was aware of the circumstances.

Evil exists, unfortunately. Would it not be better to attempt to explain to children on your own terms? Schoolyard gossip and sensationalism will happen anyway, so maybe better to head it off at the pass in an informed way. Protection by information, basically.

Exactly,
Itā€™s a minute silence for a lady who died.
Such a small thing,
Are we going to have to keep the kids from hearing the news as well? I was 5 years old or so when the Yorkshire ripper was on the rampage and I remember it well, nobody was shielded from it.
Unbelievable contrarianism, my first thought was ā€˜thatā€™s during lunchtimeā€™

Itā€™s an invite to take part is all

Yesm my 6 year old wonā€™t have a clue what happened. He will be totally oblivious. My 9 year old heard about it on the news and had a few questions which is fair enough at her age. And as you say was easy to explain on our terms.

I think any teacher in a primary school will be more than equipped to know what to say. And a lot more qualified in that judgement than many on here (not saying you).

Itā€™s people who do the same job as her holding a minuteā€™s silence at work for her ffs. I take the point about kids being exposed to it needlessly but Iā€™d be fairly sure primary school teachers are fairly used to dealing with kids and will deal with it sensitively. ā€˜Were having a minuteā€™s silence for a teacher who diedā€™

I rang Fintan last night and explained to him how to behave properly as a young man, that he should jump out of the way when he is out running and sees a woman. I explained to him his male privilege. I then posted the story on linkedin to show that I made a difference

At what age do kids generally start to understand death? Around 8?

Donā€™t be such wanker kid.

The contingent of sad angry disaffected losers posting on here has grown considerably recently. It goes well beyond the Nogra now.
