GAA All Star Wars

Think its 20 Wexford hurlers who have won All Stars. Club breakdown as follows:

3 Faythe Harriers, Rathure, Buffers Alley, Oulart
2 Rapparees, St Martinā€™s
1 Duffry Rovers, St Anneā€™s, Cloughbawn, Rathgarogue/Cushinstown

Thatā€™s a pretty cheap jibe all the same at Faythe Harriers. Outside say Kilkenny who are not far off winning half of the All Ireland titles since the All Stars were introduced in 1971, three All Star players from the same club is not a bad haul. In Cork, outside of the traditional big three city clubs of Glen Rovers, St Finbarrs and Blackrock, I donā€™t believe thereā€™s any club that has provided more than three All Stars. I donā€™t think thereā€™s too many in Tipperary. The only club that immediately springs to mind as providing more than three All Stars is Roscrea. There might be one or two more, but I canā€™t think of them off hand.

Mount Sion would probably push any of the Kilkenny sides close for most All Star representatives.

Kilmallock have three.

James Stephens had won the most about 15 years ago anyway. Ballyhale have won a lot since so possibly leading club now.

Youā€™re too modest. Straight off without looking at the record book, I can think of four Kilmallock men that have won All Stars.

In terms of personnel, think the Village have 9 players in total - Fan Larkin, Chunky Oā€™Brien, Brian Cody, Joe Hennessy, Peter Barry, Brian McEvoy, Philip Larkin, Jackie Tyrrell and Eoin Larkin.

Reckon Shamrocks have 8 players in total - Ger Fennelly, Liam Fennelly, Henry Shefflin, Cha Fitzpatrick, Mick Fennelly, Colin Fennelly, TJ Reid and Joey Holden.

For what itā€™s worth.

  1. Eoin Murphy.
  2. Cathal Barrett
  3. James Barry
  4. Daithi Burke
  5. Ronan Maher
  6. Tadhg de Burca
  7. Padraic Maher
  8. Jamie Barron
  9. David Burke
  10. Walter Walsh
  11. Austin Gleeson (YHOTY & HOTY)
  12. Patrick Maher
  13. Richard Hogan
  14. Seamus Callanan
  15. John McGrath

Unlucky to miss out, Shane Fives, Padraig Walsh, Noel McGrath and Pauric Mahony.

Unlike you to slip up Geoffrey. Mick Crotty of James Stephens won one in 1974

I thought of Tom McCormack and Micky Crotty off the side of the mid 70ā€™s alright but didnā€™t credit either of them with winning an All Star. Thatā€™s 10 Village men so.

I must work out the combined haul when I get a chance sometime. Henryā€™s haul of 11 might help put the Shamrocks ahead.

Thereā€™s actually a club that has at least 11 different men who have won All Stars.

Houlihan twice, Clarkey once, Paddy Kelly once and Shaughs of course. My bad.

Football doesnā€™t count

From a quick google I reckon the Village still edge out Ballyhale and Blackrock

In that case, Michael Cahill was definitely better than Paul Murphy for the other corner back slot anyway

An other old favourite question from when I was on the sports quiz circuit many years ago was the only county to have won All Stars in every position 1 to 15 in both hurling and football. I think thereā€™s two counties that have done it now.

Cork and Offaly?

You wouldnā€™t live in the midlands too long before you hear that Offaly did it first.

Itā€™s worth nothing.

No, itā€™s not. Wexford has a rich hurling history and tradition.
