I think young hurler of the year is an under 21 competition.
Most players are now 22 before making their debut without talking about having major impacts on games.
Outside of the three named Iād say Ryan + McCarthy (Clare), Connery, O Leary Hayes + Downey (Cork), Keyes (Laois) and Keogh (Dublin) were the only ones to start championship games. A few others came on as subs.
There is a case for making it an under 22 competition. In that case a lot more players who made memorable impacts on the championship could be rewarded. Donnelly, Burke, Kingston and Coleman from the list of nominated all stars. Montgomery would be another one.
Itās definitely handier alright but from a development point of view I think itās a bit of a loss. Will be interesting to see how they fit in the u19 this year
A good club 17 year old who doesnāt make the County Under 17ās is kind of at nothing in the current set up. One club minor match and training session per week isnāt a lot.
Cian Darcy was probably the last Under 17 I remember to play Senior Club in Tipp and he was well able for it. Was ripping it up in County Quarter/Semi Finals in Semple in 2015.
Brilliant competition. The best thing the GAA did in a hurling development aspect in the last decade. Football trying to get in on the act there as well.
