that was the one that really got away. They had the beating of Kilkenny that day but left them off the hook by gifting them goals. That Kilkenny team were not quite the behemoth they soon developed into.

Yeah but Gerald McCarthy reaching an All-Ireland semi-final with a county which hadn’t reached the business end of the championship since 1963, and Michael Ryan failing to reach one with a team which had reached the previous six in a row, are much more pertinent facts, mate

they got Donie Ryan’d

No shame in that

Pity Clinton Hennessy was not in goal.

Kilkenny killed them early on with goals

Waterford were always playing a game of catch up they were never likely to win after that and they only got within three points of Kilkenny right at the end

And that Kilkenny team was far from firing on all cylinders

So that’s two of Justin McCarthy’s four semi-finals where a series of cheap early goals was their undoing

Might have won an All Ireland in 2004 if Clinton had been in goal.

Thought tbe 2006 one point defeat to Cork was huge aswell. They did everything right that day but Cork had subs when it mattered.

That says it all

A mediocre plodder, like most of that Limerick team

How did Justin get on with Limerick

Davy Fitz is being regarded as a success and he presided over the biggest all ireland annihilation of the modern era.

we aren’t judging him on his Limerick managerial term. This is a discussion centered on Waterford.

A very underrated game. Was very tight. Think Kilkenny would have beaten them well in the final though.

Youre all talking tripe — different eras, players, oppositions, different formats, different s & c,

Success is judged by titles won. Anything else is an excuse and a failure.

But he got to a final

No other Waterford manager in the modern era can say that apart from Derek

And that Kilkenny team of 2008 was the greatest of all time at their ultimate peak

Davy’s record as a manager is very good, he’s had success wherever he’s gone

Kilkenny would not have brought the same intensity vs waterford as they did to stop cork winning 3 in a row. Also waterford’s hunger might just have got them over the line. All conjecture though.

All those you mentioned were attacking players . Unfortunately for them they had a porous defence .

In the 2007 semi final they hurled Limerick up a stick if you take away the first 10 mins and last 5 . They were out 3 weeks in a row too .

All that said if the 2007 Lk team could get 5 goals think what Kk would have done in final .

doesn’t matter - he didn’t win an AI with Waterford - he won one Munster. Justin won three.

He has got a very good record. He’s won a few provincials and an All Ireland. it stands up against most, probably anyone, with regards to variety.

Davy has an All Ireland, a Munster and a Leinster as a managerial titles.
