I was in class the other day and was explaining how stats have destroyed team sports. A few of the SCT gave me knowing nods.
There’s no denying that, as far as the purest goes for sure
I think with a lot of the stats stuff, like GPS data etc you are in marginal gains territory, unless you are at elite club level. There are so many other factors which will have a much bigger impact on your performance.
GPS stats are useful and help confirm a particular view but really need to be contextualised. I’d rank video analysis as much more useful. But until you are at the level where your structure, style and skills are absolutely spot on they wont make much odds.
You can’t let the tail wag the dog.
No point spending thousands on Stats/GPS/Video if you haven’t the coaching/fitness side of things sorted first.
Look - obviously it’s having the coaches etc and the players themselves that’s the most important thing, but again, if you’re flat out refusing to use in depth performance analysis and fitness analysis, then you’re giving away that edge, simple as
I do agree that you need to right people to be using them though, to use them most effectively
I’m telling you though, teams have a taste for it and have been spending more money than you might think - and I’m including Camogie clubs in that bracket
The really serious elite clubs would all be spending a fortune on it - there’ll be laptops galore in TUS GG on Sunday - but theres hardly much point investing too much in it for a Junior/Intermediate club team where half the players probably go off on holidays the week before a game.
If you haven’t got a few lads who can take a score all the laptops in the world won’t get you to a county final
Was @caoimhin pro or anti ball walls?
I doubt anyone is flat out refusing to use them, its just spending thousands for what I’d see as a marginal gain isn’t the best use of funds. If you have unlimited budget then brilliant, bring it on.
To paraphrase Babs, you can have all the performance analysts you want but a performance analyst won’t put the ball over the bar from 60 yards.
Kev was giving a Tour De Force today on the Age grades topic.
Stats have taken the fun out of teams sports. Lads are scared shitless of turning over the ball that there is no or little scope for any creativity or innovation. Players are slaves to the system and the system stifles individual brilliance. Obviously you get outliers like Clifford but the number of ‘great players’ is in decline imho.
I cant see why players can not be left to express themselves more within a team structure.
Kev was anti ball walls, Hego was pro ball walls.
My auld lad was complaining about ball walls lately saying they breed too many fancy dan fuckers. I mentioned Hego and he said there are exceptions to every rule.
this is going to lead to a load of Limerick/Kinnerk bashing
I can tell you why, because people want to win. If you aren’t as naturally talented as the best team, you have to find some other way to beat them. Be it a system, or cynicism, or both. The days of man for man are gone with 10+ years.
Those modern day mass concrete ones are shit in my opinion. They take all the sting out of the ball and its fair slow to come back to you.
A proper old school handball alley is hard beat though. Ball flying around the place. Even a gable end is better.
I think there is plenty of individual brilliance in Limerick’s structure.
yeah but you’re a fair minded observer. Wait and see
