GAA Managerial Merrygoround Thread

I genuinely haven’t a clue either. That’s what I meant though it’s the last fairly widespread genuine out in the open but hidden nod and wink thing that goes on in Ireland. Hard to believe it hasn’t been clamped down on yet. Why bother money laundering Daniel kinahan can just pay his cousin to manage Longford slashers

I’d love to know at what point during the conversations between Club/Benefactor and Prospective Manager/Coach does money come up.

There is little doubt of that

Wexford club currently paying €20k to a certain manager.

That is the case for some I’m sure but most clubs wouldnt have that, it would go down as training expenses or something

Thats mental stuff and totally unsustainable. A shortcut to ruining a club.

This would be sounded out in preliminary soundings between trusted intermediaries of both parties. What would ye be prepared to go to versus what would it take and common ground is found.
It then progresses to the mechanics of reimbursement - I’m sure you’ll be able to figure things out from there. There are some innovative schemes/wheezes among some rural clubs where creative minds converge.

If Revenue actually went after people, they could make it very uncomfortable for them. Unlike other elements of the law, Revenue can raise an estimate based upon very little and put the burden of proof on you to prove otherwise.

But I’ve never heard of them going after GAA managers which does seem a little weird. Maybe someone high up keeps the focus elsewhere.

They did by God.

I’d imagine with no basis that many inter county managers are just paid through the books.

And fwiw the top man in Revenue is Niall Cody (James Stephens).

He doesn’t appear to be one to show favour to anyone either so I’m sure they’re well aware of what’s going on but reckon it isn’t worth the hassle.

I doubt that’s true.

Brolly is a smart man but a populist and a hypocrite.

His eulogising of the Dublin machine and ridiculing of others trying the same things is funny.

Some clubs just don’t have managers within. Just the way it is but with exposure to good people that changes over time.

This is it. You are condeming clubs to have to pick from the local clowns. You might be very lucky and have a great one. Even at that how long would he be able to do it without pissing off everyone or giving up on it.
So then what, you pick the second best. And when they leave. What then.
Silly talk really.

A profit is never recognised in his homeland. And that is why most lads do it

We’ve only ever had one outside manager and he was the worst ever, a cabbage, took a team with Ken McGrath and Tony Browne to a relegation playoff before he was asked to sling his hook and the team looked after the relegation playoff themselves.

It is. I regret my post now.

But Mount Sion have a load of plonkers willing to put themselves forward I’d imagine. Or at least a couple.

There’s a pool of about 5 or 6 who do it on rotation

Dr. Crokes gaa club facebook page popped up on my timeline last night, they were confirming Aidan O’Mahoney as their new senior hurling manager. Thought nothing of it, thinking it’s a common enough name. Turns out it’s the former all star. Weird. Never heard of him playing hurling or profess his love like Galvin. Maybe I’m wrong and he did?
